NSA Doval To Meet Wang In Beijing On Monday To Discuss India-China Border Issues

National Security Advisor Ajit Doval is set to travel to Beijing on Monday for the next round of India-China Special Representatives’ discussions on the long-standing boundary dispute.

Doval, India’s Special Representative for the talks, will meet his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi for the 25th round of negotiations on Tuesday. The mechanism, established in 2003, was created to seek a comprehensive resolution to the boundary question along the 3,488-km India-China border, PTI reported.

Although the talks have not produced a final settlement, officials consider the channel important for managing tensions and maintaining communication between the two sides.

The latest meeting comes ahead of the BRICS summit scheduled to be held in New Delhi on September 12-13. While Beijing and New Delhi have not officially confirmed Chinese President Xi Jinping’s participation, officials on both sides are hopeful that he will attend. His visit could pave the way for a meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the sidelines of the summit.

Modi and Xi last met in August 2025 during the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit in Tianjin.

Ahead of Doval’s Beijing visit, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar stressed the importance of maintaining peace along the border for improving broader bilateral relations. His remarks came amid reports of heightened activity by Chinese troops in Arunachal Pradesh’s Upper Subansiri area.

“I think we went through a particularly bad patch between the summer of 2020 and the autumn of 2024, and that was primarily an outcome of the situation in the border areas,” Jaishankar said at the Economic Times World Leaders Forum* in New Delhi on Saturday.

The remarks referred to the prolonged tensions that followed the 2020 border crisis and the subsequent efforts by India and China to restore stability along the Line of Actual Control.
