The Chief Justice Of India Surya Kant on Friday expressed ‘serious concerns’ over the Delhi Metro Railway Corporation’s (DMRC) decision to close down 57 stations ahead the protest planned by the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
“In the absence of the organisers, we have serious concerns regarding the closure of metro stations. We are concerned about millions of people who are travelling for their livelihood from Gurgaon, East Delhi, South Delhi etc,” he said.
“Our concern is about 100s, 1000s of commuters coming from Greater Noida, South Delhi for livelihood…students…on behalf of common citizenry, we are saying this should not be stopped,” Surya Kant said.
The remarks came as the top court was hearing a plea filed before it against the proposed closure of metro stations and cancellation of trains to Delhi on October 10. A bench comprising of the CJI and Justices Joymalya Bagchi and V Mohana was hearing the plea filed by senior advocate Kapil Sibal, appearing for CPI(M) general secretary MA Baby who told the top court that entire Delhi has been directed to be locked down and that citizens have a fundamental right to protest.
Senior advocate Abhishek Singhvi and advocate Prashant Bhushan also joined Sibal and urged the apex court to take note of the proposed closure of metro stations, saying the entire Delhi is being barricaded. The entire city cannot be shut down because police apprehend something and are unable to maintain law and order, the lawyers said.
“Everybody does not have a private car,” the CJI said.
