The government of US President Donald Trump has imposed strict restrictions on the International Criminal Court (ICC). US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said that the court should stop taking action against America, otherwise America will try to eliminate it. America is also angry with the court because it has issued arrest warrants against many Israeli officials including Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The US government alleges that the court is unfairly targeting American and Israeli citizens. Court said – Sanctions will not stop the work ICC Deputy Prosecutor Najahat Shamim Khan condemned the American sanctions. He said this action is an attempt to undermine international law and the work of an independent court. Khan made it clear that despite the restrictions, the court will continue its investigation and legal action. Sanctions a few hours after the Nobel Prize: According to Reuters, America imposed these sanctions at a time when former South African judge Navi Pillay was announced to have received the Nobel Peace Prize just hours earlier. Bharatvanshi Pillay was a judge in the ICC’s Appeals Chamber from 2003 to 2008. He was given this honor for his work in the field of international criminal justice. He also played a role in investigating possible cases related to the actions of US troops in Iraq and Afghanistan. However, America had planned to impose sanctions long before the announcement of the Nobel Prize. American companies may also be affected. American sanctions may also affect those companies which provide services to ICC. American companies could be barred from doing business with the court. Due to this its banking, insurance and software services may be affected. Keeping in mind the possibility of sanctions, ICC had started preparations in advance. According to the report, the court had started adopting other options instead of Microsoft software and making new arrangements for banking and health insurance. America also asked allied countries to put pressure. Rubio said that America had given ICC and its member countries a chance to resolve their concerns, but this did not happen. He also asked America’s allies to rein in the court. According to Rubio, the door to negotiations with sanctions has been kept open. If a solution is not found through talks, America can take further steps. What is International Criminal Court? International Criminal Court was established in 2002. It hears cases such as war crimes, serious crimes against humanity and genocide. It has 125 member countries.
