When Jane G (14-29 years), who sends direct messages (DM) indiscriminately on Instagram, comes in front of her boss or senior, her fingers freeze on the keyboard. A new report from LinkedIn shows that 83% of Gen G professionals in India avoid talking or networking with people who can help them in their careers. The reason is the fear of being judged. According to the report, 44% are afraid that people will misjudge them, 39% feel that they are annoying the other person, and 37% are afraid that their conversation will seem fake. The result is that this generation is cut off from good advice, new connections, and great opportunities, all while being on a screen 24/7 is the hallmark of this generation. Interestingly, 79% of Indian Gen Z believe that professional relationships are important, but more than half (52%) do not know how to start one. 53% say they find it difficult to turn acquaintances into real connections, and are hesitant to pay the price. About 59% say that no one ever taught them how to build professional relationships. Whereas the reality is that Indian job candidates with insider connections have about 8.5 times more chances of getting selected than those without connections – that is, avoiding networking is actually avoiding the opportunity. The matter of relief is that the door is open from the other side also. 92% of Millennials (46-61 years) and 95% of Gen Nirjita Banerjee, career expert and senior managing editor (India), LinkedIn, says that as career paths are becoming more crooked instead of straight lines, the ability to build good relationships has become as important as skills. Networking doesn’t mean randomly messaging strangers or making awkward introductions. Small conversations gradually build trust and provide opportunities, advice and support at the right time.
