A pink colored stone weighing about 800 grams found in the Sahara Desert in 2022 has turned out to be from Mars. This has been confirmed in research done with the help of NASA. Investigation revealed that this rock is more than 4.1 billion years old. Such minerals have been found in it, which show that in the early stages of Mars, water had come in contact with its rocks. This discovery may help in understanding the old atmosphere of Mars. According to scientists, at that time Mars was not as cold and dry as it is today. How was it confirmed to be a rock from Mars? This rock has been named ‘Teghaja 001’. It was found in the Teghaza salt field of Mali. Initially scientists did not know where this stone came from. To identify it, scientists examined the isotope of oxygen present in it. Isotopes are different forms of the same element. Their ratio may be different in the rocks of different planets. During investigation, the isotopes of this stone were found matching with the rocks of Mars. After this the scientists examined its structure and minerals. Small crystals called Zircon were found in it. With the help of these crystals, scientists found out the age of the rock. Why are signs of water in rocks important? The minerals found in the rock and their texture show that water was once present on Mars. Some of the minerals in the rock had changed due to exposure to water. This information is important because it can help scientists understand what the atmosphere of early Mars was like and how much water was present there. It may also help us understand how water on Mars has decreased over time. However, finding signs of water does not mean that there was ever life on Mars. More study is still needed for this. Where did this rock come from on Mars? Scientists compared the data obtained from the orbiter orbiting Mars with the minerals and chemical composition of this rock. Based on this, 13 such places were identified on Mars from where this rock could have come. Many of these places are in the elevated and cratered areas in the southern part of Mars. However, its exact location has not been identified yet. How did this meteorite reach Earth from Mars? According to scientists, due to the collision of a large cosmic body on the surface of Mars, a piece of rock there might have been thrown into space. After a long journey this piece reached the earth and was found in the Sahara desert. Such solid bodies falling on Earth from space are called meteorites. These are often found in desert and snowy areas. It is easier to identify them here compared to the surrounding land. Teghaza 001 is one of the oldest meteorites that came to Earth from Mars. In this, the early rocks of Mars and the signs of the impact of water on them are preserved.
