An attempt was made to demolish an under-construction Ramakrishna Mission school in Mawkinrev village of Meghalaya’s East Khasi Hills district on Monday. Police said that a mob of 250 people wanted to demolish this school. Lathicharge was done to stop them. Tear gas shells were also fired to control the situation. Even then the situation did not come under control so curfew had to be imposed in the village.
Police said that Ramakrishna Mission School was established in 2022 by the then Sardar (village head) after getting nine objection certificates issued, but the current village head opposed this decision. He said that this school is illegal on this land. A total of 8 people were injured in the clash with the police. Among them, 4 were villagers and 4 were policemen.
