Commonwealth Games 2026, India Day 9 LIVE: Neeraj Chopra Starts With 80.97m

The Pakistani giant throws a foul first throw.

Former Commonwealth Games champion Neeraj Chopra is back in a CWG final for the first time since his gold-winning campaign in 2018.

The Indian makes a solid start, opening with a throw of 80.97m to comfortably clear the 80-metre mark. Neeraj looks pleased with the effort as he begins his title challenge. He gets some instructions about the dip from his coach.

India’s Yash Vir Singh is the first athlete in action, but his opening attempt ends in a foul as he steps over the line after releasing the javelin.

England’s Ben East follows with a strong opening throw of 81.12m to move into the early lead. Australia’s Cameron McEntyre is unable to match that effort, managing 71.66m with his first throw.

Harshveer Singh Sekhon finishes 21st in the men’s elimination race final, ending well outside the medal positions.

The stage is set for a blockbuster men’s javelin throw final at the Commonwealth Games 2026, with Neeraj Chopra, Rohit Yadav and Yash Vir Singh representing India.

On paper, Anderson Peters (SB: 86.38m), Neeraj Chopra (SB: 85.69m), Rumesh Pathirage (SB: 92.62m), Rohit Yadav (SB: 87.05m), Cameron McEntyre (SB: 85.73m) and Chinecherem Nnamdi (SB: 84.68m) head into the final among the leading contenders based on this season’s form. However, Pakistan’s Arshad Nadeem boasts a personal best of 92.97m, his season’s best stands at 78.63m.

The moment everyone has been waiting for is almost here. India’s Javelin champion Neeraj Chopra will be in action in about 20 minutes in the men’s Javelin final. Currently, the women’s pole vault final is on in CWG 2026.

Tejaswin Shankar heads into the final event of the decathlon, the 1500m, with 7,272 points, giving him a cushion of more than 100 points over England’s Sammy Ball in the race for a medal.

A gold, however, remains a long shot. Tejaswin would need to produce a season-best 4:29 in the 1500m, while leader Lindon Victor would have to finish around 32 seconds slower and Damian Warner about 10 seconds slower for the Indian to climb to the top of the podium.

Third Round: Some crazy play here as both players throw punches rather aggressively and aimlessly. Now Kings-Wheately is pinned on the corner but turns her opponent well. This might hurt her. Kings-Wheately tries a couple of powerful hooks but Priya does well to defend herself. Kings-Wheately looks less tired, and Priya is breathing from her mouth.

Second Round: WOW! Scores Level! The second semi-final goes to a final-round shootout after a completely opposite split decision to the last. India and England are drawn here. Nothing between them as Kings-Wheately comes back.

First round: Priya wins 4-1! Superb round from her. Could have gotten the fifth in her favor too, had it not been for King’s-Wheately’s late comeback. The Indian was brilliant in her combination play and her coach advises her to do more of it now.

India’s Priya Ghanghas is up next against England’s Lucy Kings-Wheatley in the women’s 60kg semifinal. A victory will send Priya into the gold medal bout and guarantee India another silver medal at the very least. A defeat, meanwhile, will see her settle for bronze.

Tejaswin fouls his final throw. And that would be that for him in the javelin throw. A pretty solid performance, which leaves him in prime position for at least a bronze and in an off-chance for a rare Decathlon gold.

Tejaswin is currently fourth in the standings, and if he maintains his position here, he’ll be 3rd in the overall Decathlon standings. The 1500-metre race later tonight is going to be especially important.

Superb throw from Tejaswin! Neeraj Chopra, who will be in action later today, would be proud as his compatriot has thrown his season-best 53.12m, and can now take 635 points. He’s in third place now for this event. Let’s see where he ends up in the final standings.

Third round: Sakshi in the final! Her Canadian opponent just looked a beat behind her throughout the three rounds. Brilliant performance from the Haryanavi boxer. She’ll compete for the Gold Medal tomorrow!

Shankar is participating in Javelin throw, meanwhile, and his first throw is a foul one.

First Round: Easy as you like it from Sakshi. She gets several good punches away and wins the first round by unanimous decision.

India’s Sakshi Chaudhary is up next as she takes on Canada’s Amber-Jane Wall in the women’s 51kg boxing semifinal, with a place in the gold medal bout at stake.

Saikia is about to win the second set. She’s leading 7-2 after the sixth end.

And she has! She takes the win 11-2 in straight sets.

Yamini Mourya loses! Toprak wins the Gold. A great fight from the Indian CWG debutant, but she concedes a third Shido, which ends her time. Two golds and a silver for India in Judo!

We are six minutes in and yet to see a point. Mourya is yet to make a proper attack. Toprak is only attack so far but every time she’s taking the Indian down, Mourya is closing her body and getting the game to stop.

Golden score goes on until a point is scored. And this is becoming a proper dogged fight. Mourya is defending well and now Toprak also has a second Shido. This could be decisive now.

Golden Score: So we are going into sudden death because the score is 0-0. Whoever gets the first point wins the gold! Asmita Dey won in this round last time.

Oh no! One Shido for Toprak but another for Mourya, who has 2 now. She’s being dominated here. Toprak is playing extremely aggressively, and Mourya is not getting a chance. But will she get an opening for a counter?

Yamini hasn’t got off to the best of starts here and Toprak has got a Shido out of the Indian. It’s one of the three warnings. Three of these lead to a disqualification. But India had a couple of Shidos before as well.

Here comes Yamini Mourya to take on England’s Acelya Toprak in the women’s -57kg final, with a third Judo gold medal on the line for India!

Saikia is trailing 0-2 after the first End in Set 1.

Ronaldo Singh Laitonjam and David Beckham Elkatohchoongo bow out of the men’s keirin after failing to progress from the first-round repechages. Ronaldo finishes last in his heat, while Beckham places second-last, ending both their campaigns.

India’s hopes now rest on Jemsh Keithellakpam, who is yet to compete in his repechage race. Scratch that, too, for he’s now out as well.

Harsh Singh wins to secure India’s second GOLD with a regulation-time victory! Before today, India didn’t have a single Gold in CWG Judo. Now, we have TWO! That too coming in a span of minutes.

Harsh locked his legs around his opponent, who seemed to get away with it, but within seconds he put him on his side for a beautiful Waza-ari. Amazing performance. Believe it or not, we can have a third Gold soon!

Now we have India’s Harsh Singh, who takes on Australia’s Joshua Katz in the men’s -60kg gold medal bout.

The judokas make their way onto the mat, with Harsh entering first. The Indian makes an aggressive start, attempting to trap Katz with his legs, but the Australian escapes without conceding any advantage. And he tries again for an Ippon but the Aussie survives.

India’s cyclists miss out on automatic qualification to the men’s keirin second round, with all three riders now heading to the repechages for another shot at progressing. Ronaldo Singh Laitonjam ends seventh in the opening heat, while David Beckham Elkatohchoongo and Jemsh Singh Keithellakpam finish fifth in their respective heats, leaving all three with a must-win repechage race.
