The Central Government has ordered the historic Delhi Gymkhana Club located in Lutyens’ Delhi to vacate the campus by June 5. The Centre’s Land and Development Office (L&DO) issued this order by sending a letter to the club secretary on May 22.
It said that the government needs 27.3 acres of land occupied by the club for strengthening defense infrastructure, institutional needs and other projects. According to the order, the land lease has been terminated by the President.
Club member Siddharth said that the government order will be challenged in court. He said there was no security threat from the club and the claims made in the order should be reconsidered.
Delhi Gymkhana Club was established during the British period. It started in 1913 under the name Imperial Delhi Gymkhana Club. After independence, its name was changed to Delhi Gymkhana Club. The existing buildings were built in the 1930s.
This is the main building of the club. The main gate to enter from here is also there.
There is a club near PM residence, built by a British architect
Delhi Gymkhana Club was designed by the famous British architect Robert Tor Russell. He also designed Connaught Place and Teen Murti Bhavan. This club is near the Prime Minister’s residence, Lok Kalyan Marg, due to which this area is considered a high-security zone.
Many facilities including badminton-tennis court in the club
For the last 112 years this club has been a symbol of high-society status. The club has 26 grass tennis courts, which is said to be the most of any club in the country. Apart from this, there are also squash courts, badminton courts, billiards room, swimming pool, three lounge bars and 43 cottages.
The club has long been a favorite haunt of bureaucrats, army chiefs, judges, politicians, industrialists and old business families. Membership here is considered as prestigious as any big government post.
Only 100 people get membership every year
It is considered very difficult to get entry into this club which has about 1200 members. One had to wait for 20 to 30 years for membership. Every year only about 100 new people are able to take membership.
The 40-40-20 rule remained in force at the club for decades. 40% membership was for civil services, 40% for defense services and the remaining 20% for others. Earlier, children of club members were also given priority. This made it more difficult for outsiders to become members.
Before membership, there was also a process called ‘at home’, where existing members would decide whether the new person was of their status or not. The club also remained in controversies due to this high-society status culture.
