The Home Ministry has implemented the Citizenship (Amendment) Rules, 2026 on Friday. Under the new rules, now the application for Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) will have to be made completely online.

Besides, the facility of e-OCI document has also been provided along with the physical card, which will make the process more simple and digital. It has been made clear in the new rules that no minor can hold Indian and foreign passports simultaneously.

This provision has been added to bring clarity in matters related to dual citizenship. The government has clarified that OCI status is a privilege, not a right. If a holder violates Indian laws, his OCI registration can be cancelled.

These facilities are available from OCI

OCI card holders enjoy lifetime multiple entry visa, economic and educational facilities in India. However, the government has reiterated that OCI holders do not get political rights like voting or holding constitutional posts.

Rules for cancellation have been tightened

The government had already tightened the rules and said that if an OCI holder has been sentenced for 2 years or more or is chargesheeted for a crime punishable with 7 years or more, his registration can be cancelled.

OCI scheme was started in 2005

The OCI scheme was introduced in 2005 through an amendment to the Citizenship Act, 1955. Under this, people of Indian origin are given the facility of registration as OCI. However, people associated with Pakistan or Bangladesh are not included in it.
