Bringing change to Cuba, the stronghold of conservative communist ideology, has never been easy. But the command of this country is in the hands of a person who has spent his entire life living out of the box. We are talking here about Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel. Diaz-Canel, who fought against the shortcomings of the system in his youth, is again in the headlines. He warned America that if any military action was taken against Cuba, there would be ‘bloodshed’. His personality has been full of contradictions. Faced opposition from fundamentalists, started talks with America. During his student life, Miguel had rebelled against the strict communist discipline of the school just because he was fond of having long hair. Later, ignoring the strong opposition from the radicals within the party, he restarted the diplomatic relations with America which had been closed for years. Diaz-Canel, who once shed tears over the public pain, is accused of crushing the mass movements of 2020 and 2021. Then 1400 arrests were made. 700 people including women and children were sentenced to imprisonment of 10-25 years. During the recession, he used to go to office by bicycle. In the 1990s, Cuba was struggling with the economic recession, while being the provincial party secretary, Miguel gave up the government car. He used to go to office daily by bicycle. When the power crisis deepened, he used to visit hospitals in the dark of night and by torchlight used to apologize with folded hands to the patients lying on the beds for the chaos. It was considered rare for communist leaders to meet the public or admit their mistakes. Live telecast Cuba was ruled for decades by Fidel Castro and Raul Castro, who were known for hours-long and boring speeches. But that changed when Diaz-Canel took power as president in April 2018. He is famous for his ‘to-the-point’ talks of just a few minutes. Started live telecast of cabinet meetings, so that common citizens can see what decisions are being taken for the country and which officer is giving what answer. In addition, he also officially gave his wife Lise Cuesta the status of ‘First Lady’ for the first time, breaking communist traditions.
