Dr. Verma is a pregnancy health advisor and is associated with Physicians for Reproductive Health. In his opening statement, he defended medical abortion and said that these drugs have been in use for a long time and are safe. He told that more than 100 scientific researches have been done on abortion medicines and these medicines have proved to be safe and effective. According to him, since its approval in 2000, more than 75 lakh people have used abortion pills in America. Senator Hawley repeatedly asked him to give a straight answer and emphasized that this was not a question of politics but of biology. He said that he is checking the credibility of Dr. Verma as a doctor. In response, Dr. Verma said that such questions try to simplify the truth of the patients and are often used for political purposes. MP said – Pregnant women are there, not men. Josh Hawley rejected this argument and said that pregnant women are there, not men. He alleged that Dr. Verma is not accepting the basic truth of biology and in such a situation it is difficult to trust her testimony. He also said that abortion drugs cause serious health problems in 11% of cases, which is more than the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) knows and that this hearing is for the safety of women. Dr. Verma said that she takes inspiration from science and is narrating the experiences of her patients. Polarizing language and questions do not serve this purpose. Can men get pregnant? According to the American website Medical News Today, men generally cannot get pregnant. Pregnancy is not possible for people who are born with male reproductive organs and live as men. But some transgender men and non-binary people can get pregnant. Pregnancy is possible only when a person has a uterus. The uterus is the organ where the child develops. The male reproductive organs include the penis and testicles, but no uterus. The words ‘man’ and ‘woman’ describe gender, which is an identity associated with society. Gender is related to a person’s social role, behavior and identity. Whereas biological sex is based on body parts. Gender and sex are not the same and gender depends on a person’s identity. The uterus and ovaries are necessary for pregnancy. People are often considered male or female at birth. People who identify with the gender they were assigned at birth are called cisgender. Cisgender men cannot get pregnant, even if they have sex with men. But some people are considered female at birth, but later consider themselves male or gender non-conforming. Uterus and ovaries are present in the body of many such people. For this reason they can become pregnant and give birth to a child. Gender non-conforming means that a person, despite being a boy or a girl, does not behave as society generally expects from them. Risk of pregnancy becoming difficult due to taking testosterone: Some transgenders take ‘Male Testosterone Hormone Therapy’. Due to this, male-like changes start taking place in the body, such as the voice becoming heavier, hair growing on the body and muscles becoming stronger. According to research, periods stop within a few months of taking testosterone, which can make pregnancy difficult, but not completely impossible. Studies show that taking testosterone does not make a person completely infertile. However, some health risks may increase during pregnancy. Nevertheless, in most cases the outcomes of pregnancy and childbirth have been found to be normal. A 2014 study included 41 transgender men and gender non-conforming people who became pregnant and gave birth. In this study it was found that some people had become pregnant without their periods returning. Researchers also reported that there was no significant difference in pregnancy and delivery outcomes between people taking and not taking testosterone. Some transgender men delivered by C-section, but this was a decision based on their personal preference and comfort. This does not mean that they cannot perform normal delivery. In 2019, a transgender became pregnant two months after stopping testosterone. In a case study published in 2019, it was reported that a 20-year-old transgender man became pregnant two months after stopping testosterone. She delivered a healthy baby boy after 40 weeks without any complications. After the birth of the child, she also chestfed for some time and then started testosterone therapy again. Some transgender men also undergo gender reassignment surgery. These include chest surgery, hysterectomy surgery and male genital reconstruction surgery. If a person’s uterus has been removed, he cannot become pregnant. In some very rare cases, partial surgery may result in an ectopic pregnancy, in which the embryo develops in the wrong place even if the uterus is not formed. Such cases are very few. In future, scientists are doing research on uterus transplant. It is possible that in the coming time men may also be able to conceive biologically, but at present this is only at the research stage. Senator Hawley said – Being a woman is a biological reality, not a controversy. At the end of the hearing, Senator Hawley said that avoiding this question is harmful to science, public trust and women’s legal rights. He said that considering women as a biological reality is not a matter of controversy but a fact and denying it weakens science and women’s safety. The special thing is that in February 2024, Senator Josh Hawley had similarly asked tough questions to Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg during a Senate hearing, after which Zuckerberg had to apologize to the parents of children affected by social media.
