नेचिरवान बरजानी कौन हैं, जिनके जरिए हुई अमेरिका-ईरान बातचीत: ट्रम्प IRGC चीफ तक नहीं पहुंच पाए, बरजानी के जरिए हुई सीक्रेट बात

During the increasing tension between America and Iran, a secret channel was created in May for talks between the two countries. According to American news website Axios, President of Iraq’s Kurdistan region Nechirwan Barzani played an important role in this contact. Barzani has good relations with both America and Iran. Actually, talks were going on between America and Iran to end the war. On behalf of America, Vice President JD Vance and on behalf of Iran, Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf and Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi were talking. But during the talks, America wanted to find out whether Ghalibaf and Araghchi also had the support of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) or not. For this America took the help of Barzani. Barzani spoke directly to IRGC commander General Ahmed Vahidi. America itself was not able to reach the IRGC Chief. By the beginning of May, the White House felt that an agreement could be reached between the two countries. But the conversation suddenly stopped. Iran did not respond to the American proposal for about 10 days. This made the Trump administration suspicious that Ghalibaf and Araghchi, who were negotiating on behalf of Iran, may not be in a position to take a final decision. America wanted to know whether the IRGC also agreed with what the two leaders were talking about or not. The Trump administration knew that in Iran, especially on sensitive matters like security and nuclear, government consent alone is not enough. IRGC also plays a big role. Why did Barzani become America’s choice? Nechirvan Barzani is the President of the Kurdistan Region in the northern part of Iraq. This area is part of Iraq, but it has its own government, parliament and security forces. Its capital is Erbil. The Kurdistan region has long been a close ally of the US. At the same time, Barzani also has old relations with Iran. Barzani spent time in Iran during the Iran–Iraq War and attended Tehran University. He speaks Persian language and has personal relations with many senior leaders and officials of Iran. That is, Barzani’s specialty was that he had access to both America and Iran. For this reason, the Trump administration sought their help to reach the IRGC leadership. Nechirvan Barzani, the third generation leader of the Barzani family, was born in Erbil in 1966. He comes from the Barzani family, the most influential in Kurdish politics. His grandfather Mustafa Barzani is counted among the great leaders of the modern Kurdish movement. At the same time, his uncle Masoud Barzani has been the President of the Kurdistan Region. That is, Nechirvan comes from a family that has had a strong hold in Kurdish politics for several generations. Had to go to Iran during the era of Saddam Hussein. During the reign of Saddam Hussein, large-scale military action was taken against the Kurds. During this time, the Barzani family had to leave Iraq and go to Iran. Nechirvan spent his early years in Iran. There he studied, learned the Persian language and made contacts with many influential people of Iran. Later these relationships came in handy in his politics also. Because of his time spent in Iran, he had a good understanding of the language, society and political system there. Nechirvan Barzani returned to Kurdistan in the 1990s and became active in politics. He rose rapidly in the politics of Kurdistan. Between 1999 and 2019, he was Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Region several times. After this, in 2019 he became the President of Kurdistan Region. Today he is counted among the most influential leaders of Iraqi Kurdistan. Tulsi Gabbard called Barzani According to Axios, America’s then National Intelligence Director Tulsi Gabbard contacted Barzani for the first time on May 10. Gabbard told him that the Trump administration needed his help in contacting IRGC commander General Ahmed Wahidi. Gabbard told Barzani she was making the request with the approval of President Donald Trump and Vice President J.D. Vance. The US also wanted to know whether the IRGC has any separate demands and whether it supports the talks with Iranian negotiators. Barzani spoke to Vahidi by encrypted phone. Barzani agreed with Gabbard and passed the American message to the IRGC through his contacts. After this, Vahidi expressed his desire to talk directly to Barzani. On May 14, an IRGC official arrived at Barzani’s office in Erbil. He brought an encrypted phone with him, so Barzani could talk to Wahidi securely. After this there was a direct phone conversation between Barzani and Vahidi. Barzani asked Vahidi if he was with Ghalibaf and Araghchi, who were negotiating on behalf of Iran. Wahidi replied yes. He said that he fully supports both the negotiators and this is also the stand of the IRGC. He also said that the IRGC wants to resolve this crisis through dialogue. Wahidi’s message reached the White House. After the conversation, Barzani contacted Tulsi Gabbard and told her Wahidi’s message. Gabbard passed this information on to the White House. This gave the Trump administration confidence that Ghalibaf and Araghchi, who were negotiating on behalf of Iran, had the support of the IRGC. After this the Trump administration asked for another help from Barzani. The US wanted Barzani to host a secret meeting between the American and Iranian delegations in Erbil. However, this meeting could not take place. According to the report, the Iranian side was worried about its security. Why did Barzani’s importance increase? Nechirvan Barzani’s biggest strength is his relations with both America and Iran. His early years in Iran and his old contacts there gave him access to the Iranian leadership. At the same time, Iraqi Kurdistan has long had close relations with America. For this reason, Barzani’s role was important in this case. The US was not able to reach the IRGC commander itself, but through Barzani’s old Iranian contacts the US team was able to convey its message to the IRGC leadership.
