In a significant breakthrough, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has successfully secured the deportation of Kubbawala Mustafa–a key accused in a synthetic drug case– – from the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to India.
The extradition process was successfully carried out in an operation coordinated by the probe agency through INTERPOL and Mumbai Police, officials said. The CBI’s International Police Cooperation Unit (IPCU), in coordination with the National Central Bureau (NCB) in Abu Dhabi, played a key role in securing the return of the Red Notice subject.
A four-member Mumbai Police team escorted Mustafa from the UAE to Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport, where he was taken into custody by the crime branch.
“The International Police Cooperation Unit (IPCU) of CBI, in collaboration with NCB-Abu Dhabi, successfully brought back wanted Red Notice subject Kubbawala Mustafa to India,” a CBI statement read.
Mustafa was geo-located in the UAE through close follow-up by CBI through INTERPOL with NCB-Abu Dhabi, the probe agency said.
Who Is Kubbawala Mustafa?
Mustafa was wanted by Mumbai police in an FIR registered at Kurla Police Station on the allegations of operating a Synthetic Drug Manufacturing Factory in Sangli from abroad.
In April 2024, Mumbai Police had busted a synthetic drugs manufacturing facility in Sangli, where 126.141 kg of mephedrone, a party drug also known as ‘meow meow’, worth Rs 2.5 million, was recovered and confiscated. It was alleged that Mustafa ran the factory from abroad.
Mephedrone, also known as 4-methylmethcathinone, 4-MMC, and 4-methylephedrone, is a synthetic stimulant drug belonging to the amphetamine and cathinone classes.
Mustafa has been chargesheeted and Court also issued arrest warrant against him.
On Mumbai Police’s request, a Red Corner Notice was published by INTERPOL on November 25, 2024. Following sustained follow-up by CBI’s International Police Cooperation Unit (IPCU), NCB-Abu Dhabi confirmed on June 19 that the UAE authorities had approved a security mission to repatriate the accused.
Red Notices by INTERPOL are global alerts used to track and arrest fugitives wanted internationally.
