Who is Amar Subramanya? Bengaluru graduate becomes Apple’s Vice President of AI


Apple has announced that Amar Subramanya, a well-known AI researcher of Indian origin, has joined the company as Vice President of AI. He will report to Craig Federighi. According to Apple, John Giannandrea, the company’s Senior Vice President of Machine Learning and AI Strategy, is retiring. Until his retirement in 2026, he will continue to serve the company in an advisory role.

Apple said Subramanya will lead key areas such as Apple Foundation Models, ML Research, and AI Safety and Evaluation. He brings extensive experience to the role. Before joining Apple, he was Corporate Vice President of AI at Microsoft. Prior to Microsoft, he spent 16 years at Google, where he served as the engineering head for Google Gemini Assistant.

Apple noted that Subramanya’s deep experience in AI and ML research, and in integrating that research into products and features, will play a crucial role in Apple’s ongoing innovations and the future of Apple Intelligence features.

Apple CEO Tim Cook said about Amar, “AI has long been central to Apple’s strategy, and we’re pleased to welcome Amar to Craig’s leadership team as he brings his extraordinary AI expertise to Apple.”

John Giannandrea has played a key role in shaping Apple’s AI and machine learning strategy since joining the company in 2018. He built a world-class team that developed and deployed major AI technologies. This team now oversees Apple Foundation Models, Search and Knowledge, Machine Learning Research, and AI Infrastructure.

Thanking him, Tim Cook said, “We are grateful to John for everything he has done to advance our AI work. He has helped Apple innovate and improve the lives of our users.”
