Asian Games is called Olympics of Asia. Players from 45 countries participate in these. But why do Russia, Turkey and Israel, which are present on the map of Asia, not play in these games? The answer to this question cannot be found in geography alone. A country’s participation in the Asian Games is also determined by its history, membership of sports organizations, international relations and political circumstances. And this is where the story of these three countries becomes completely different from each other. Israel: Israel was once a part of the Asian Games, out of the Asian Games due to political disputes. He participated in these games from 1954 to 1974. But the increasing political tension in West Asia also affected sports. Indonesia did not invite Israel to the 1962 Jakarta Asian Games. Many Arab countries had objected to the competition against Israeli players. Later, when the Olympic Council of Asia was formed in 1981, Israel did not become a member. After this he increased his association with European sports organizations. Its football team plays under the European Football Association. Can we play in future? There has definitely been a change in the political equations of West Asia. Israel formed formal relations with the UAE and Bahrain following the 2020 Abraham Accords. Relations with Morocco also normalized. In September 2026, both countries announced to further strengthen their diplomatic relations. However, this cannot be called the process of Israel’s return to the Asian Games. Israel is not included in the current Olympic Council of Asia member list. Turkey: 97% of the land is in Asia, but sports infrastructure is in Europe. About 97% of the land of Turkey is in the Asian part i.e. Anatolia. Despite this, Türkiye maintained strong ties with the European structure in political, economic and sporting institutions. After the formation of modern Turkey in 1923, its association with Western institutions increased. Even in sports he gave preference to the European system. Its football team is a member of the European Football Association. Turkey also participates in European competitions in many sports such as basketball, volleyball and athletics. Can play in future- Turkey has not taken membership of Olympic Council of Asia (OCA). Therefore, having most of its territory in Asia does not automatically give it the right to play in the Asian Games. If it wants to participate in the Asian Games in the future, it will have to earn a place through OCA membership or through some participation arrangement. Russia: 75% of its land in Asia, but population and sports identity in Europe About 75% of Russia’s land is in Asia, but 75% of its population lives in European Russia. Major cities such as the capital Moscow and Saint Petersburg are also in the European part. Even in sports, Russia’s identity has long been linked to Europe. Since the Soviet era, its sports structure remained linked to European institutions. Russia has also been part of the European sporting structure in football. Can play in future- Russia is not included in the Olympic Council of Asia. However, this year OCA welcomed the decision of the Indian Olympic Association regarding the participation of Russian players in international competitions. The Asian parts of Russia definitely have some connection with Asian sports activities. Young players from Asian countries participate in the Children of Asia Games held in Yakutia. Australia Not in Asia, Yet Getting Close Australia is not part of Asia, but it has strong ties to Asia in sports. In 2006 it left the Oceania Football Confederation and joined the Asian Football Confederation. A major reason behind this was the path to World Cup qualification. Oceania teams had to play intercontinental playoffs to reach the World Cup, while Asia had more chances for direct qualification. Can play in the future – Membership of the Asian Football Confederation does not imply the right to play in the Asian Games. The Asian Games are held under the Olympic Council of Asia. Australia is not included in the current OCA General Assembly. Yet there is an example for Australia. OCA has included countries from Oceania as guests in its events. Australia and New Zealand were awarded berths as Guest National Olympic Committees at the 2025 Asian Winter Games. Not only sports but also the market can be a reason behind this. Australia is already connected to the Asian sports market through football. 9,305 media and broadcasting representatives have been confirmed for the 2026 Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games, including 23 rights-holding broadcasters.
