Onion prices in the country rose sharply during June-September. According to government data, the average retail price of onion on June 1 was Rs 29.50 per kg.
On September 17, it increased to Rs 53.78 per kg. That means, in just about three and a half months, there was a huge increase of 82.3% in onion prices.
The rise in wholesale markets was even greater. On June 1, the average price of onion in the wholesale market was Rs 22.60 per kg. On September 10 it was Rs 46.20. Done, then on 17th September it was Rs 45.68. were recorded.
In this way, wholesale prices have almost doubled compared to June. The main reason for this rise is the damage caused to the summer onion crop in Maharashtra and the reduced arrival of it in the market.
Apart from this, there has been a decrease in the supply of onion from both the states of Maharashtra and Karnataka. There is pressure on supply also due to delay in arrival of new Kharif crop in the market.
Government steps and effects of reducing onion prices
Relief from buffer stock: The government stores the onion purchased cheaply and as soon as the price increases, it releases it in the market at cheaper rates like ₹ 35 per kg so that the general public gets relief.
Restrictions on exports: When there is a shortage in the country, the government imposes tax or ban on the export of onion, so that there is no shortage of onion in the country.
Impact on common man: Government onions reduce the burden on the pocket to some extent, but due to high prices in the retail market and frequent changes in policies, complete relief is not available.
Why do onion prices increase at this time of the year?
Every year there is a rise in onion prices during August to September. There are mainly three big reasons behind this:
Increase in demand during festive season: Consumption increases due to Rakshabandhan, Ganesh Utsav and upcoming festivals.
Weather and Logistics: Due to rain, the supply chain gets affected and goods reach the markets late.
Crop rotation: The stock of the old crop starts getting exhausted and it takes some time for the new Kharif crop to arrive.
