Congress MLA S Rajesh Kumar takes oath in Vijay cabinet.
The swearing-in ceremony of the expanded Vijay-led cabinet in Tamil Nadu on Thursday witnessed a brief but politically charged moment when newly inducted Congress minister S Rajesh Kumar invoked the names of Rahul Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi and Congress stalwart K Kamaraj during his oath-takingprompting an immediate intervention from Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar.
As Rajesh Kumar began taking oath as minister, he raised slogans praising Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and the late Rajiv Gandhi, besides invoking the legacy of former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister K Kamaraj, one of the tallest Congress leaders from the state. The Governor interrupted him mid-oath and remarked, “This is not part of your oath,” before the ceremony proceeded further. A video of the moment quickly went viral on social media and triggered political reactions online.
The development came during a significant cabinet expansion by Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay, whose Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) government inducted 23 ministers into the state cabinet. The expansion is being seen as a move to stabilise and broaden the coalition government formed after the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections.
Notably, the Congress returned to the Tamil Nadu cabinet after nearly six decades, with two of its MLAs — Rajesh Kumar and P Vishwanathan — taking oath as ministers. The induction marks a major political milestone for the party in the state and reflects the evolving alliance equations after the election results produced a fractured mandate.
Vijay’s TVK had emerged as the single-largest party in the Assembly but fell short of the majority mark, eventually securing support from Congress and several other parties to form the government. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi had publicly congratulated Vijay after the election victory and backed the new political arrangement in Tamil Nadu.
