There is a danger of sudden flood due to landslides in the hilly areas of Nepal. When soil and stones slip from the mountains and block the path of a river or drain, water starts accumulating at one place. After some time, when the blockage of soil and stones breaks, the accumulated water starts flowing rapidly downwards. This causes sudden floods in the villages situated on the banks of the river. The flow of water is so fast that it carries away big stones, trees and debris along with it. Due to this, houses, roads and bridges can collapse. Many times people do not even get a chance to recover and go to a safe place. For such floods to occur, it is not necessary that there has been rain in the same area. Sudden coming down of water accumulated in the upper part of the mountain can cause devastation even in remote villages.
