BJP’s national general secretary Vinod Tawde’s first task as BJP’s Uttar Pradesh election in-charge is clear – it includes studying the state, working closely with the leadership and organisation, and delivering a bigger win. Tawde will begin his first Pravas (political tour) of Uttar Pradesh in the first week of September, with an extensive ground-level assessment of the state’s electoral landscape. He is likely to travel across around 100 Assembly constituencies where the BJP trailed during the 2024 Lok Sabha election, making these seats an early focus of his electoral strategy. The exercise is expected to give the new state in-charge a ground-level reading of the party’s vulnerabilities, from caste equations and local organisation to the performance of MLAs and the administration.
But the groundwork for him has already begun. Hundreds of political workers, leaders, MPs, MLAs and Panchayat Pradhans from across Uttar Pradesh have been queuing up at Tawde’s office to meet the state’s new election in-charge. The meetings are almost endless. Tawde has been making time for them, listening to their concerns, taking feedback and getting a first-hand sense of what is happening on the ground. It is a style that has earned Tawde a reputation as one of the most accessible leaders in the party. For BJP workers and local leaders, the ability to walk in, meet him and put their views across directly is becoming an important part of his outreach as he takes charge of one of the party’s biggest organisational assignments.
“We will study the state and will work together to deliver a bigger win,” Tawde told News18, setting the tone for what will be one of the BJP’s most consequential organisational assignments ahead of the Assembly polls.
But Tawde enters Uttar Pradesh with more than just organisational experience. He is among PM Narendra Modi and union home minister Amit Shah’s trusted political lieutenants, with long-standing links to the Sangh Parivar. His equation with Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath will also be closely watched as the BJP seeks to convert its organisational machinery and the chief minister’s popularity into an election-winning formula.
The choice comes after Tawde’s successful handling of Maharashtra, where the BJP-led alliance had been on the back foot after the Lok Sabha election. The party eventually recovered electorally and returned with a stronger mandate. That turnaround, amid complicated caste equations, alliance management and organisational challenges, is likely to be part of the template Tawde carries into Uttar Pradesh.
Alliance, Organisation And Yogi
Yet UP is a vastly different political battlefield. At 403 Assembly seats, its scale alone dwarfs Maharashtra’s electoral complexity and political-social equations. More importantly, the BJP’s challenge is not merely about seats. It is also about managing caste arithmetic, regional political equations, candidate selection, organisational strength and the performance of its MLAs and administration. The party has a new entrant in its electoral coalition, and it has to manage its seat-sharing formula in a way so that it keeps the party veterans happy.
The Lok Sabha setback remains an important warning. The BJP’s performance exposed vulnerabilities that cannot simply be dismissed as an aberration. The party will have to rebuild its social coalition while ensuring that its core support remains intact.
Caste will be central to that exercise. The BJP will need to balance Brahmins, Rajputs, OBC groups and non-Yadav OBC communities while navigating the competing ambitions of regional allies. Yogi’s strong appeal among Thakurs is an asset, but the BJP cannot afford an election strategy that appears to rest on a single social bloc.
The alliance picture will be equally critical. Jayant Chaudhary’s RLD, which became part of the BJP-led alliance in 2024, brings a limited but strategically significant pocket of seats and influence. The question for Tawde will be where alliance arithmetic actually adds value, and where the BJP should rely on its own organisation.
That makes the Tawde-Yogi equation crucial. Tawde’s proximity to the central leadership and the Sangh, combined with his organisational credentials, gives him the ability to function as a bridge between Delhi, Lucknow and the wider party network. The BJP’s objective, however, will go beyond damage control. After the Lok Sabha setback, the Assembly election is an opportunity to reassert the party’s dominance in Uttar Pradesh. His Maharashtra experience shows he can manage a party that is fighting from the back foot and turn the electoral narrative around.
