The Central Government has approved the use of 100% pure ethanol as fuel in the country. Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari gave this information during a press conference in Nagpur on Saturday, June 13. He told that he has signed the file finalizing the rules and regulations related to this decision. The main objective of this step is to reduce the country’s dependence on crude oil (fossil fuel) imports and to prevent pollution from the transport sector. Ethanol-powered cars will hit the market in the next 6 weeks. The Union Minister said that the country’s automobile sector has accepted this change and many big companies are fully prepared to launch 100% ethanol-powered vehicles in the market. According to Gadkari, other companies including Toyota, Suzuki, MG and Hyundai are going to launch their new models in the Indian market within the next 6 weeks which will run completely on ethanol. Much cheaper option than petrol, import bill will reduce. Nitin Gadkari stressed that ethanol can emerge as an economical and sustainable alternative to petrol. India currently fulfills a large part of its requirement by importing crude oil from abroad, which puts a financial burden on the country’s treasury. With the introduction of 100% ethanol, not only will the general public get relief from expensive petrol, but India’s huge fuel import bill will also reduce to a great extent. What is ethanol? Ethanol is a type of alcohol, which is made from the fermentation of starch and sugar. It is mixed with petrol and used as eco-friendly fuel in vehicles. Ethanol is produced primarily from sugarcane juice, but ethanol can also be produced from starch containing materials such as corn, rotten potatoes, cassava, and rotten vegetables. E85 fuel was launched only last week, government’s focus on biofuel. The government is continuously taking steps to reduce carbon emissions from the transport sector. In this sequence, last week itself the government had introduced E85 fuel for flex-fuel vehicles. The price of E85 fuel in Delhi has been fixed at ₹82.12 per liter. This is a full ₹20 less than the regular E20 petrol sold in Delhi. This fuel is a mixture in which up to 85% ethanol and 15% petrol is mixed. Now with the approval of 100% ethanol, a new chapter has started in the green energy and biofuel sector in the country. Currently, 4 types of flex-fuel are being sold in the market. E85 fuel cannot be used in normal petrol vehicles. It can be used only in these selected vehicles. For this, the engine of the vehicles should be specifically based on ‘flex-fuel’ technology. Maruti Suzuki WagonR Flex-Fuel: It is India’s first passenger car designed to run on blends up to E100 (100% ethanol), which is fully compatible with E85. Hero Splendor+ and HF Deluxe: Hero MotoCorp has introduced the first flex-fuel motorcycle in the country’s mass-market 100cc segment. These bikes can run on fuel ranging from E20 to E85 and their sale will start in Delhi and some areas of Maharashtra from July 2026. Suzuki Gixxer SF: This bike is also included in this list which supports high-ethanol fuel.
