The September visa bulletin has brought relief for Indian families waiting for permanent residence i.e. green card in America. Green card eligibility dates have advanced significantly in many family-based categories. However, there has not been much change in the EB-1 category. The EB-1 category includes people with exceptional talent, excellent professor-researchers and some senior MNC executives. Its final action date for India is September 15, 2022. The September visa bulletin is the last bulletin of the current financial year. The US fiscal year runs from October 1 to September 30. The new annual visa numbers will be available from October 1. F-1 extended by 13 months In the September visa bulletin, the final action date for the F-1 category for India and China has been extended from 15 December 2018 to 22 January 2020. This category is for unmarried adult sons and daughters of US citizens. Relief of about 20 months in F-2B: The date of F-2B for unmarried adult sons and daughters of green card holders has increased from January 1, 2018 to August 22, 2019. That means there has been an increase of about 20 months in one month. Increase in F-3 by about 29 months. The final action date of F-3 for married sons and daughters of US citizens has increased from May 15, 2012 to October 22, 2014. There has been an increase of about 29 months. F-2A date extended by one month for spouses and minor children of green card holders from July 22, 2026 to August 22, 2026. The total limit for family-based immigration in FY 2026 is 2.26 lakh and the limit for employment-based immigration is 1,86,317. There is a limit of 7% i.e. 28,862 visas per country. Overall, many family-based green card categories saw good progress this month, while EB-1 remained unchanged. A new bill regarding immigration was introduced in America. Earlier, a bill was introduced in the US Senate, in which it is proposed to allow people living in America continuously for the last 7 years to apply for Green Card. Green card is the official document granting permission to permanently live and work in the US. It is officially called Permanent Resident Card. Why is this proposal important for Indian H-1B visa holders? This proposal is considered important for Indians because Indians constitute the largest number of people working on H-1B visas in America. At present, there is a fixed limit (per-country cap) applicable for each country on employment-based green cards. For this reason, it takes many years for thousands of Indians to get a green card. If this bill becomes law, eligible H-1B visa holders who have been living in the US continuously for the last 7 years will get a new option to apply for a green card.
