The massive flood that occurred after the breaking of the glacier in Nepal has caused massive destruction. More than 1200 people have died due to this disaster in Nepal and Tibet region of China. Cities, roads, bridges and many hydropower projects have been heavily damaged.
Within hours of the flood, India started sending relief material. Till September 3, India has sent a total of 74 tonnes of relief material in five consignments, which includes about 5 tonnes of essential medicines.
India’s help was not limited to relief materials only. Doctors, paramedics, rescue teams, tunnel experts, bailey bridge and forensic experts have also been sent to Nepal.
That is, from searching for people trapped in tunnels to DNA testing and reconstruction of dead bodies, India is helping Nepal on many fronts. Nepal’s Prime Minister Balen Shah has also thanked India for its assistance in the Parliament.
Hospital built with India’s help becomes support for flood victims
Nepal-India Friendship Building in Nuwakot, Nepal has come as a big relief for the people after the floods. This building also houses an Ayurvedic and alternative hospital.
The Government of India had rebuilt this hospital after the 2015 earthquake. Due to its location at a high altitude, hundreds of people who were forced to leave their homes during the Bhotekoshi floods have taken shelter here.
11 doctors are treating flood affected people in the hospital. From here, medical help is also being provided to the people taken to different relief centers in the district.
The hospital, which is being run with the help of India, is providing accommodation, treatment and other necessary facilities to the people.
Where bridges were washed away, roads will be connected again through bailey bridges.
Connectivity to remote areas has been cut off due to many roads and bridges being washed away in the floods. To restore it, India is sending Bailey Bridge to Nepal.
Bailey bridge is a temporary bridge made of iron parts. Its parts can be taken to the affected area and assembled on the spot. This allows road connectivity to be restored quickly without waiting for a permanent bridge to be built.
According to the Indian Embassy, 16 trucks carrying equipment for the 230 feet long single-lane modular steel bridge have reached Nepal. Equipment will also be sent soon to install seven more bailey bridges. Technical teams will also reach Nepal to install these.
In Nepal, on August 26, a bridge in Rasuwa district over the Trishuli river was washed away due to floods.
Indian experts searching for people trapped in hydropower tunnels
One of the biggest challenges facing Nepal after the floods is to find workers trapped in hydropower tunnels. According to the Nepal government, more than 900 employees are feared trapped in several tunnels.
On August 30, a team of Indian tunnel rescue experts reached Nepal. The team, along with the Nepali Army, is searching for workers in hydropower tunnels in flood-affected areas of Chilime and Langtang.
A team of ‘Rat Miners’ from Delhi-NCR has also offered to join the rescue operation in Nepal. This same team played an important role in rescuing 41 laborers trapped in the Silkyara Tunnel of Uttarakhand in 2023.
Indian Tunnel Rescue Team is continuously working in Nepal.
India’s help in DNA testing for identification of dead bodies
After the flood waters recede, now another big challenge before Nepal is to identify the recovered bodies and missing people. For this, India has sent a 19-member forensic team to Nepal.
Indian experts are examining the DNA samples along with the Nepalese team. This work is being done in two labs in Kathmandu Valley. These include Nepal Police Central Forensic Science Laboratory and National Forensic Science Laboratory of Khumaltar.
According to Nepal Police, 1,068 bodies had been recovered till Tuesday evening. In about 400 cases, only some body parts were found. In such cases, it has become very important to identify the dead through DNA testing.
The Indian team is doing DNA testing of the remains of the dead bodies. So that the bodies can be handed over to the relatives.
India will also rebuild the school destroyed in the flood
India’s help is not limited to relief and rescue operations. India has also decided to rebuild the flood-damaged Tribhuvan Trishuli Secondary School in Bidur, Nuwakot.
This school is also important in terms of India-Nepal cooperation. Its old building has been associated with India’s development assistance. Now the new building will also be built under the High Impact Community Development Program of India.
India has stood with neighboring countries during disasters
The current relief operation in Nepal is another example of India’s policy of helping other countries during disasters.

- Even after the devastating earthquake in Myanmar in March, India helped in relief and rescue operations under Operation Brahma.
This time also India’s role in Nepal is not limited to just initial relief. From treatment to rescue, search in tunnels, connecting broken roads, identification and reconstruction of dead bodies, India is engaged in helping Nepal at every level.
