The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) has announced the preliminary exam schedule for the recruitment of 474 vacancies for the Engineering Services Examination (ESE) 2026. Candidates slated to appear for the exams can check the full schedule on the official website at upsc.gov.in.

The exam will be conducted on February 8, 2026 (Sunday) in two shifts:

9:30 AM to 11:30 AM — General Studies and Engineering Aptitude Paper (Paper-I)

2 PM to 5 PM — Civil, Mechanical, Electrical, Electronics and Telecom Engineering (discipline specific paper)

Both papers will feature objective type questions. Paper I will be conducted for two hours consisting of 200 marks while paper II will be held for three hours and 300 marks. Candidates are advised to reach at least 30 minutes before the commencement of the exams. Exam city intimation slips and admit cards are expected to be released by January.

UPSC ESE Salary Details

– Junior Level (Entry): Rs 55,135–64,749 (basic salary plus allowances)

– Senior Scale/Promotion: Salary increases with promotion

– Senior Grade / Cabinet Secretary Grade: Rs 80,000–90,000 fixed salary

Categories Of Posts:

– Category I – Civil Engineering: Central Engineering Service, Border Roads Engineering Service, MES Surveyor, Indian Railway Management Service

– Category II – Mechanical Engineering: GSI, Institutions, Department of Defence, Indian Railway Management

– Category III – Electrical Engineering: Central Electrical and Mechanical Engineering Service, Power Engineering, Indian Railway Management

– Category IV – Electronics & Telecommunication Engineering: Indian Telecommunication Service, Radio Regulatory Service, Railways and Defence Department

UPSC ESE Selection Process

The UPSC Engineering Services exam consists of three stages:

1. Preliminary Exam (Prelims): General Studies & Engineering Aptitude Test plus Candidate’s chosen engineering department

2. Mains: Two descriptive papers, no negative marking

3. Personality Test/Interview: For final selection

These positions pertain to the Civil, Mechanical, Electrical, and Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering branches. Those who have completed diploma or degree in Engineering (Civil, Mechanical, Electrical, Electronics and Telecom) or M.Sc are eligible to apply for the exam. They must also be between 21 to 30 years of age.
