France captain Kylian Mbappe on Monday hit back at Paraguayan senator Celeste Amarilla, calling her “despicable” and “unworthy of her position” after she made racist remarks against him following the World Cup last-16 clash between France and Paraguay.
Mbappe’s response came after Amarilla criticised the Real Madrid forward on social media following Saturday’s match in Philadelphia, where France secured a 1-0 win in a heated encounter. Mbappe scored the decisive goal from the penalty spot in the second half to send France into the quarter-finals.
Taking to X, Mbappe condemned the senator’s comments and called her a “despicable woman”.
“Madame Celeste Amarilla, you are a despicable woman and unworthy of your position,” Mbappe wrote. “You do not represent Paraguay, that country which has sweated passion and honor throughout the competition.”

The French superstar also criticised Amarilla for overshadowing Paraguay’s campaign with her remarks, saying her “recklessness and brazen racism” had taken attention away from the team’s performance at the World Cup.
“The entire world has already forgotten the journey and the historic effort that your players accomplished during this World Cup, making way for an incompetent woman who gives the worst possible image of her country,” he wrote.
Mbappe, whose father is originally from Cameroon before settling in France, added that he would not allow “people like her the freedom to spread their hatred and racism across the world”.
Paraguayan Senator’s Remarks Spark Backlash
Amarilla had posted comments targeting Mbappe after the match, calling him as a “colonised Cameroonian who has really pretended to be French”. She also called him “embittered, nouveau riche, arrogant and ugly” and claimed he appeared “scared to death” during the game.
The remarks drew widespread criticism, with French Sports Minister Marina Ferrari calling them as “abject” and “disgraceful”, saying they were even more unacceptable because they came from a politician.
Mbappe, whose father is originally from Cameroon before settling in France, has previously spoken about racism in football and society.
The controversy came after a tense last-16 match between France and Paraguay, with Mbappe scoring the only goal through a second-half penalty. The result helped France secure a place in the World Cup round of 16, where they will face Morocco on Thursday.
