A couple in Paris continued enjoying their drinks at an outdoor cafe as flames rose from the street just metres away, in a scene captured near the Arc de Triomphe on October 17. The incident took place amid violent protests across France.

The video showed the man and woman seated at a cafe table, seemingly undisturbed by the fires burning behind them. Neither appeared to make an effort to leave, continuing their conversation as the unrest unfolded nearby.

The unusual contrast between the couple’s seemingly relaxed outing and the burning objects on the road caught attention online. According to Reuters, the footage was uploaded to the news agency’s servers after a delay and subsequently drew reactions from viewers.

One user on X interpreted the scene as a sign of resilience amid the unrest, writing, “Amid the chaos and protests, this serene scene in one of Paris’s cafes stands out as a symbol of resistance and resilience.”

The footage emerged amid demonstrations across France over the rising cost of living, price increases and concerns about the country’s social welfare model.

Saturday’s protests drew around half a million people across France. However, the demonstrations escalated into some of the country’s worst violence in years, with town halls and shops looted and set ablaze. More than 2,500 people were arrested, while nearly 1,000 security personnel were injured.
