The central government has alerted people about cyber fraud. According to the Home Ministry, fraudsters are targeting people by using the names of the Prime Minister, Finance Minister and Chief Ministers and deepfake videos.
In the advisory, it has been advised to take special care regarding calls and WhatsApp messages coming from numbers with country code +92 of Pakistan.
However, a call cannot be considered fraudulent based only on the country code. Be sure to check the claims of any unknown person.
In this regard, the National Cybercrime Threat Analytics Unit of the Indian Cybercrime Coordination Center (I4C) under the Home Ministry issued an advisory.

Ask for fees in the name of government schemes
Fraudsters run fake advertisements on Facebook and Instagram and claim to provide financial assistance under government schemes. In return, they ask for money in the name of tax, processing fee and registration charge.
Through deepfake technology, fake videos are made by altering a person’s face and voice. Through these videos, fraudsters deceive people by pretending that fake government schemes are genuine.
Fraud through cashback and UPI also
Cyber fraudsters lure cashback or rewards by giving offers like scratch cards and ‘spin and win’. After this, after approving the UPI collect request and entering the PIN, they withdraw money from their account.
Keep in mind that entering the UPI PIN is required to make payments from your account, not to receive money.

What to do to avoid fraud?
- Check information about government schemes from the official website of the concerned department.
- Do not share Aadhaar, PAN, bank details, OTP and UPI PIN with any unknown person.
- Do not click on suspicious links and do not accept unknown UPI requests.
- In case of cyber fraud, immediately call helpline 1930 or lodge a complaint on cybercrime.gov.in.
- Inform the bank immediately and keep the evidence related to the transaction safe.
