Days after an explosion at Qatar’s Barzan gas facility killed 13 people — including 12 Indians — the country’s top energy official walked into the Indian Embassy in Doha carrying a message of condolence.
Saad bin Sherida Al-Kaabi, Qatar’s Energy Minister and President and CEO of QatarEnergy, visited the embassy on Wednesday to personally convey sympathies to the families of those killed in the blast, which occurred on Sunday at Ras Laffan Industrial City.
“The loss of innocent lives is a tragedy that touches all of us. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families and loved ones of those who lost their lives during this tragic incident,” Al-Kaabi said in a statement issued by QatarEnergy.
The minister met Indian Ambassador Vipul and expressed condolences on behalf of both the Qatari government and the country’s energy sector. He also wished a speedy recovery to those injured in the explosion.
We are grateful for the visit of H.E Saad bin Sherida Al Kaabi, Minister of State for Energy Affairs and President & CEO of QatarEnergy to our Embassy today for conveying condolences on the sad demise of 12 Indian nationals in the accident at Ras Laffan Industrial City on June… pic.twitter.com/N2OzgyHcC0— India in Qatar (@IndEmbDoha) June 24, 2026
The blast claimed 13 lives, including one Pakistani national, and left at least 66 people injured. Qatari authorities have attributed the incident to a technical malfunction during operations at the facility, though an investigation into the exact cause remains underway.
The gesture comes a day after Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke with Qatar’s Amir, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, who expressed grief over the deaths of the Indian nationals. Modi later said both leaders shared the sorrow of the bereaved families and prayed for the recovery of those injured.
For India, whose workers form a significant part of Qatar’s energy workforce, the tragedy has resonated far beyond the walls of Ras Laffan. For Qatar, it has become a moment of national mourning that has drawn condolences from the highest levels of government and industry alike.
