At three people were killed and nine others were injured following a smoke bomb attack and a knife attack in Taipei on Friday, reported the Associated Press, citing officials. The smoke attack took place at the busy Taipei Main subway station, where a suspect allegedly set off smoke bombs before turning on commuters.

According to the Taiwan Premier Cho Jung-tai, the attacker first released smoke devices at the station.

The suspect reportedly kept moving through the subway system after the initial incident. A footage of the incident aired by broadcaster EBC and cited by AP, shows the person travelled one stop on the metro, got off, threw more smoke grenades and then pulled out a knife to stab passers-by.

During the incident, a 57-year-old man was found unconscious at the scene after suffering cardiac arrest. He was rushed to a hospital and given emergency treatment, the official Central News Agency said.

After carrying out the smoke attack, the suspect reportedly went on to stab at least four people near the Zhongshan MRT station. He then ran into a nearby shopping mall, where police surrounded him. According to media reports, the suspect fell from an upper floor of the mall and died.

Local hospitals reported three deaths from the attacks. The city government said nine others were hospitalised, including one with serious injuries.

Suspect Chang did not turn up for his reserve military training in November 2024 and was later listed as wanted for breaching mandatory military service laws, the news agency said. It added that he allegedly failed to update his household registration details, which led to his reserve service notice not being delivered, citing a district prosecutors’ office.
