Teach Marathi Or Lose Recognition: Maharashtra Minister’s Stern Warning To Schools

Maharashtra government announced strict action against schools that fail to teach Marathi as a compulsory subject from classes 1 to 10.  Schools of all mediums and under all management boards across the state are required to follow this rule, School Education Minister Dadaji Bhuse informed the Legislative Assembly.

Addressing the state assembly, Bhuse stated that the government will initiate inspections and could revoke the recognition of non-compliant schools. Marathi has been mandated for students of Classes 1 to 10 in all schools, including those following national and international curricula. The state enacted legislation and issued a notification on March 9, 2020, to this effect.

Replying to a question raised by MLA Haroon Khan in the Assembly, Bhuse said that according to the government notification issued on March 1, 2020, Marathi has been made a compulsory subject in schools of all mediums and under all managements in the state.

He further mentioned that while some international schools may offer Marathi as a second or third language, the teaching of Marathi remains compulsory. He addressed concerns from MLAs about certain prominent international schools not offering Marathi and assured that the government would inspect based on received complaints.

“If the inquiry discovers that Marathi is not being taught, institutions will be asked to comply with the rules and given an opportunity to rectify the situation,” Bhuse said. He added that if schools fail to comply even after this opportunity, the government may take actions including revoking their recognition.

Bhuse also urged legislators to report any schools not adhering to the norm so that immediate inquiry and necessary action can be taken. He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to ensuring the effective implementation of the law mandating Marathi teaching in all schools across the state.
