When intentions are strong, the path is automatically forged. This is the story of Divyendu Chowdhary from West Bengal, who secured admission to IIT through relentless hard work and confidence, even in adverse conditions. His life was filled with struggles from the outset. His father supported the family by selling fish, while his mother was a housewife. Despite their weak financial situation, he never succumbed to circumstances.
Born in Sattari, a small village in the Malda district of West Bengal, Divyendu’s life was challenging from the beginning. He started his education at the village’s government school, which lacked books, a conducive academic environment, and coaching facilities. Despite these obstacles, Divyendu remained unwavering in his goal, driven by a deep interest in science.
After completing high school, he finished his 12th grade at Malda Town High School and then enrolled in Physics Honours at Bidhannagar Government College, Kolkata. It was here that he began preparing for the highly competitive IIT JAM exam, which most students tackle with coaching assistance.
Cracked JAM Without Coaching
Divyendu, however, studied independently without any coaching and cleared the challenging IIT JAM exam on his first attempt. He is now pursuing an MSc in Earth Science from IIT Kharagpur. His achievement is not just a personal triumph but also a beacon of hope for families dreaming of educating their children despite limited resources.
Today, Divyendu is a source of pride for his village and an inspiration to all students who nurture their dreams even in tough circumstances. His aspiration is to become a scientist and contribute to society’s welfare.

Meanwhile, four Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) and three Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) have been listed as defaulters for not adhering to anti-ragging regulations, according to University Grants Commission (UGC) officials. The IITs that failed to comply are IIT Bombay, IIT Kharagpur, IIT Palakkad, and IIT Hyderabad. The UGC has issued show-cause notices to 89 institutions across India for failing to submit the necessary anti-ragging compliance documents.
