Success Story: Meet Himanshu Gupta, Tea Seller’s Son, Who Cracked UPSC Three Times

While clearing this exam even once is challenging, Himanshu Gupta from Uttarakhand has managed to crack it three times consecutively.

The UPSC Civil Services Examination is not only one of the toughest exams in India but also in the world. Achieving success in this exam is no easy feat. Attaining the IAS or IPS rank requires immense hard work, dedication, patience, and confidence. While clearing this exam even once is challenging, Himanshu Gupta from Uttarakhand has managed to crack it three times consecutively. Surprisingly, he did so without any coaching.

Born in Sitarganj, Udham Singh Nagar district, Uttarakhand, Himanshu Gupta faced numerous challenges to achieve his dream. His father sold tea, which was the family’s sole means of livelihood, and Himanshu faced severe financial hardships throughout his life.

Himanshu Gupta Educational Qualification

Despite having to walk 70 kilometers daily to attend school in Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh, he remained dedicated to his education. He completed his schooling in Sirauli, a small town in Bareilly district. His father, despite the financial difficulties, encouraged Himanshu to study hard and supported him in every way possible.

After completing his schooling, Himanshu attended Hindu College, Delhi University, where he graduated with a degree in Botany. He then earned a postgraduate degree in Public Administration from Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU). During his postgraduate studies, he decided to prepare for the UPSC Civil Services Examination without enrolling in any coaching centers, relying solely on self-study and determination.

Passed Exam Without Coaching

Himanshu’s self-study and determination paid off when he passed the UPSC Civil Services Examination three times in a row. In his first attempt in 2018, he was selected for the Indian Railway Traffic Service (IRTS). In his second attempt in 2019, he secured an All India Rank of 309 and was selected for the Indian Police Service (IPS). In his third attempt in 2020, he achieved an All India Rank of 139, fulfilling his dream of becoming an IAS officer.
