Shehzad Poonawalla, who tendered his resignation as the BJP’s national spokesperson, said he had been considering stepping away from active politics since 2024 and ultimately decided to return to his professional career after finding it difficult to balance a full-time job with politics.

Poonawalla said he had previously worked in the service industry before leaving his salaried job to focus entirely on politics. Speaking to News24, he said the decision ultimately came down to choosing between employment and political work.

“I have been planning this since 2024. I was in the service industry and had a salaried job, which I left. I gave 24/7, 365 days to politics. When I felt it was either my job or politics, I decided to resume my job,” Poonawalla said.

According to Poonawalla, he informed the BJP about his decision and was asked to reconsider. However, he said he had made up his mind and would not reverse the decision.

“I am sticking to my decision. A spokesperson does not get a salary; it is a voluntary position,” he was quoted as saying.

Despite stepping away from his role, Poonawalla said his decision did not mean he had distanced himself from the BJP’s ideology. He continued to describe the party as a strong political platform, particularly for young people and the middle class.

Poonawalla also praised the BJP for allowing him to express his views independently and said the party had engaged with him whenever differences or issues arose.

“BJP never put a restriction on me from speaking my mind. In fact, only in the BJP can you speak independently. Whenever there were issues, the BJP would always call and discuss them. I will not work directly for the BJP, but I will continue to support its ideology,” added Poonawalla.

Poonawalla Resubmits Resignation

His comments came after Poonawalla once again submitted his resignation from the BJP. He had earlier offered to step down from all party posts and primary membership on July 30, but the resignation was not accepted.

On Monday, Poonawalla said he had sent another resignation letter to BJP president Nitin Nabin, requesting the party to accept it.

“With utmost humility, sense of affection & gratitude, I have once again submitted my resignation letter to @BJP4India & Hon’ble Shri @NitinNabin ji & have requested that the same be accepted,” he said in a post on X.

Poonawalla also shared a copy of his resignation letter dated August 17, addressed to Nabin. His latest move formally reiterates his earlier decision to step away from his party responsibilities while continuing to support the BJP’s ideology.
