As the holy month of Sawan unfolds, districts across Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Madhya Pradesh, and Haryana are witnessing a massive influx of Kanwariyas, devotees of Lord Shiva, participating in the annual Kanwar Yatra. In view of heavy pilgrim movement, traffic disruptions, and safety concerns, local administrations have announced school holidays on Sawan Mondays and specific dates in several regions.
These proactive measures aim to ensure the safety of students and manage the overwhelming footfall during this sacred period. Schools along major Kanwar routes will remain closed as devotees undertake their barefoot journeys to offer holy water to Shiva temples.
List Of Districts Where Schools Are Closed Today
Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh
In the spiritual city of Varanasi, home to the revered Kashi Vishwanath temple—one of the twelve jyotirlingas—the district administration has declared that all government and private schools will remain closed every Monday during Sawan. This includes all schools located on Kanwar routes leading into the temple town. The move aims to ensure student safety amid the influx of devotees and traffic congestion caused by the pilgrimage.
Budaun, Uttar Pradesh
Similarly, the Budaun district administration has mandated school closures every Monday during Sawan. With the increasing number of Kanwariyas taking to the streets, the local government issued the order to prevent disruption for both students and school staff.
Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh
In Bareilly, where devotees gather at temples like Saptnath, Guldiya Gaurishankar, and Siddh Gopala Baba for Jalabhishek rituals, the administration has also declared school holidays on all Sawan Mondays. These measures are intended to ease traffic flow and maintain public safety during peak pilgrimage days.
Haridwar, Uttarakhand
In the holy city of Haridwar—where millions of Kanwariyas collect Ganga water—the district administration has gone a step further. All schools and Anganwadi centers will remain closed from July 14 to July 23. The closure aims to prevent overlap between school activities and the large congregations of Kanwar pilgrims, ensuring smooth crowd management.
Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh
In Ujjain, the abode of the Mahakaleshwar temple, one of the twelve jyotirlingas, officials have ordered that all schools be closed every Monday from July 14 to August 11. The city experiences a major spike in pilgrim footfall during Sawan, prompting authorities to reduce city congestion and prioritize safety.
Noah, Haryana
In Nuh district of Haryana, the local administration has declared a school holiday on July 14 due to the Jalabhishek Yatra, which coincides with the Kanwar Yatra. The decision helps avoid school-time disruptions during the religious events and ensures that roads are less congested for both devotees and residents.
