Star Indian hockey player Jarmanpreet Singh has said that he wants to do his best for the national team and continue playing, as he rubbished all rumours of retirement, which had arisen earlier this month, from Hockey India itself. The board reportedly wants to phase him and three other players out after the Asian Champions Trophy.
Earlier this month, sources in Hockey India told PTI that Jarmanpreet, Mandeep Singh, Amit Rohidas and Nilakanta Sharma, all members of India’s medal-winning teams at the Paris Olympics and Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games, are expected to make their final international appearance at the upcoming Asian Champions Trophy in Jalandhar, beginning Tuesday.
According to the report, the move is part of Hockey India’s planned transition strategy ahead of the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, for which India qualified by winning gold at the recent Asian Games.
“I want to continue playing and perform well at the Los Angeles Olympics. I want to do my best for the team. Qualifying for the Olympics by winning gold at the Asian Games is a major achievement for our team,” Jarmanpreet said while speaking to PTI.
“It’s a great opportunity for us and we are well prepared for the Los Angeles Olympics. After this tournament, we will begin our preparations for LA. I want the team to perform well there and win the gold medal,” Jarmanpreet added.
India captain Harmanpreet Singh dismissed speculation about his retirement as well, describing it as a ‘rumour’.
“I don’t think it’s right news and we did not discuss anything on these lines within the team. I think these are rumours,” Harmanpreet had said earlier.
Jarmanpreet, who has 171 international caps, was part of India’s bronze medal-winning campaign at the Paris Olympics and has also won Asian Games gold medals in 2022 and 2026.
Jarmanpreet feels he has made significant improvements as a defender.
