The central government is considering ending the legal protection provided to social media platforms. These include Facebook, Instagram, YouTube and X.
According to the Indian Express report, the IT Ministry has started discussing major changes in India’s social media rules. Under the proposal, platforms can be held responsible for users’ posts.
The government is considering limiting safe harbor protection to only internet and telecom companies or messaging platforms. Currently, this protection is also available to social media companies.
Currently, Safe Harbor is a legal protection provided under Section 79 of the IT Act. Under this, internet companies are not held directly responsible for the posts, videos and comments of users.

Meta and Google’s business increased due to security
According to an India Express report, this protection has helped companies like Meta, Google and X build big businesses on user-generated content. They do not have to bear legal responsibility for every post, video or comment.
A section of the government believes that social media platforms are no longer just a means of conveying information. They determine the ranking, recommendation and reach of content through algorithms.
These platforms remove or limit posts based on their community guidelines. These rules may sometimes differ from Indian laws.
