Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Mahua Moitra launched a fierce attack on the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), accusing it of using fear and intimidation to break the party, and pushed for unity among all Opposition parties to take on the ruling party.

The 51-year-old MP also accused rebel TMC leaders of being disloyal to former Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee by choosing to ally with the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) and dared them to resign from their positions and seek a fresh mandate on BJP tickets.

“Greed and treachery have no limits. The BJP was desperate since the drubbing on the floor of the Lok Sabha, when they did not get the two-thirds majority. So, they’ve done their calculations, and by hook or by crook, they want to get another 40-50 MPs. They do not believe in getting this through elections; they want to do it through jod-tod (breaking parties),” she told The Indian Express.

TMC Crisis LIVE UPDATES

Moitra alleged that the BJP was using central agencies to create an atmosphere of fear and a false perception of public anger against the Trinamool Congress.

Moitra Alleges ‘Greed And Treachery’

Moitra’s remarks came as the TMC is grappling with an unprecedented bout of internal turmoil, including the resignation of senior leaders, the rise of rebel factions among MLAs and MPs, talk of a merger with the Congress and fresh organisational concerns.

Referring to the TMC crisis, Moitra remarked that “greed and treachery have no limits”, stressing that all rebel MPs were elected solely because of Mamata Banerjee. “There is not one ounce of uncertainty about who the party is. The party is Mamata Banerjee,” she said.

“Everything is good about Mamata di, but she is extremely emotional and forgiving. But you are fighting a party like the BJP that is neither emotional nor forgiving. They are ruthless. Then we should also become ruthless. Loyalty has no price for them. These people (rebels) are selling out Mamata di.”

She also challenged the rebel leaders to follow Suvendu Adhikari’s example – resign and contest on a BJP ticket. “In 2021, he defeated Mamata di, fought for the next five years and is now the CM. You can like him, or you can hate him, but there is nothing wrong with that model,” Moitra said.

‘Question Of Survival’

Referring to talks of a TMC-Congress merger, Moitra called them premature, but pointed to the cancelled nomination of Meenakshi Natarajan in Madhya Pradesh and the merger of seven AAP MPs to stress the need for broader unity in opposition ranks.

“The INDIA alliance parties should put their egos aside. It is a question of survival. The combined mandate of the Opposition is more than that of the BJP. It’s just a question of getting together and fighting one-to-one. Every leader has to understand that. Otherwise, we’re all dead,” she told The Indian Express.

The MP also shared that she was hurt seeing Saayoni Ghosh, one of TMC’s most prominent leaders close to Mamata Banerjee, in the rebel camp. She also said she would stick with the Mamata faction of the TMC to fight “fascist forces”.
