Punjab Municipal Corporation Election Results 2026 Live: Counting of votes for elections to 102 civic bodies in Punjab began at 8 am on Friday, with the outcome being closely watched as a key political indicator ahead of the state assembly elections next year.
As per current trends, the ruling AAP is leadeing on 178 wards, while Congress is at distant second at 58. Akali Dal is maitaining lead on 53 seats, while the BJP has won 7.
The elections, seen as an important test for the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), covered Municipal Corporations, Municipal Councils and Nagar Panchayats across the state. The results are expected to provide the first major assessment of the political mood in Punjab before the 2027 assembly battle.
According to the Punjab State Election Commission, the civic polls recorded an overall voter turnout of 63.94%.
More than 22.38 lakh votes were cast across 102 municipalities, covering 1,897 wards and 3,833 polling booths statewide.
Among the three categories of urban bodies, Nagar Panchayats recorded the highest turnout at 76.18%, followed by Municipal Councils at 65.06%. Municipal Corporations registered a turnout of 59.91%.
Official figures showed that Municipal Councils accounted for the largest voter base, with over 22.87 lakh electors and nearly 14.88 lakh votes polled. Municipal Corporations had around 10.71 lakh electors, of whom about 6.41 lakh voted, while Nagar Panchayats recorded more than 1.07 lakh votes out of approximately 1.41 lakh electors.
Violence, Clashes Mar Polling
Polling day witnessed multiple incidents of violence, clashes and allegations of booth capturing involving supporters of the Congress, AAP, BJP and Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD).
In Raikot, Congress candidate from Ward 4, Jagdev Singh Jagga, was allegedly attacked with sharp-edged weapons by a group of men and later admitted to a private hospital in Ludhiana.
Fresh clashes were reported in Gidderbaha in Muktsar district, where supporters of AAP and SAD confronted each other during polling in Wards 18 and 19.
The SAD later submitted a complaint to the Punjab State Election Commission, accusing AAP MLA Hardeep Singh Dimpy Dhillon and his supporters of booth capturing, intimidation and assault. Election officials, however, denied reports of booth capturing.
