Mount Dukono, one of Indonesia’s most active volcanoes, erupted Friday morning on Halmahera island, sending a massive ash column nearly 10 kilometres into the sky.
The eruption killed three hikers, including two foreign nationals, while 20 others remain missing.
Authorities say rescue teams, police and emergency personnel have been deployed to search for those trapped around the volcano.

According to local officials, nine of the missing hikers are from Singapore.
The eruption was accompanied by loud booming sounds and thick volcanic ash that spread across nearby areas.
Indonesia’s volcano agency warned residents and tourists to stay at least four kilometres away from the Malupang Warirang crater — the centre of the eruption.
Officials also warned of volcanic ash rain, falling rocks and possible lava flows.
The area around Mount Dukono had already been closed to visitors since April 17 after scientists detected increased volcanic activity.
Despite the restrictions, hikers were reportedly still in the area when the volcano erupted.
Mount Dukono has seen nearly 200 eruptions since March, making it one of the most volatile volcanoes in the region.
Rescue operations are continuing as authorities monitor the volcano for further eruptions.
