Madhya Pradesh Cabinet Minister Kunwar Vijay Shah’s troubles are increasing in the matter of his objectionable remarks on Army woman officer Colonel Sophia Qureshi.

On Friday, the Supreme Court reprimanded the state government for the delay in giving prosecution approval in this case.

Chief Justice of India Surya Kant said in strong words – “Enough is enough, now follow our order.”

The court said- This was not just unfortunate, but extremely unfortunate.

During the hearing, when Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, defending the minister, said that perhaps his statement was misunderstood and he wanted to praise the woman officer, then CJI Surya Kant rejected it outright.

He said- It was not just unfortunate, but extremely unfortunate. As a politician, he knows very well how to praise a woman officer. Citing the status report of the SIT, the court remarked that the minister has a habit of making such comments.

Controversy statement was given in Raikunda village near Indore

This dispute started last year after India’s cross-border military action against Pakistan, Operation Sindoor. Colonel Sophia Qureshi had done a media briefing of this operation.

After this, during a program in Raikunda village of Mhow, Minister Vijay Shah had said, “Those who widowed our daughters, we sent one of their own sisters to teach them a lesson.”

This statement was seen to be linked to Colonel Qureshi’s religion, which was condemned everywhere.

The judge had said – If necessary to implement the court order, I will send you to hell.

Justice Atul Sreedharan of Madhya Pradesh High Court took a tough stance on this and ordered the police to register an FIR. He even said, “If necessary, I will go to hell to implement the court order.”

SIT seeks permission from government to run case, pending for two weeks

The Supreme Court had constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT) in this case. After completing its investigation, the SIT has sought permission from the state government to prosecute the case against the minister, which has been pending for the last two weeks.

A case has been registered against Minister Shah under sections 152, 196 (1) (b) and 197(1)(c) of the Indian Justice Code (BNS), which relate to endangering national sovereignty and promoting enmity between groups.

Next hearing after 4 weeks

The Supreme Court has given clear instructions to the state government to take a decision soon considering the totality of the circumstances. The court has now fixed the hearing of this case after 4 weeks.

At present, the Supreme Court has given protection to the minister from arrest, but has refused to cancel the FIR or accept the apology.
