Do you also do a desk job sitting in front of the computer from 9 am to 5 pm? If yes, then the claim of Arvind Srinivas, CEO of Perplexity AI, may surprise you. Srinivas says that this 9 to 5 desk job is not a natural evolution of human work, but was a very successful business strategy devised by Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates. Srinivas made this claim during a recent conversation in the famous podcast ‘The Joe Rogan Experience’. He said that Microsoft had deliberately created the concept of ‘modern office worker’ to sell its software. Srinivas said, ‘Microsoft created this whole concept of the office worker just because they wanted to sell their office software. Bill Gates’ mission was that there should be a PC (computer) on every desk and people should stick to it. He further said that this work culture of sitting at the desk and staring at the screen all day was systematically created from bottom to top. Podcast host Joe Rogan was also surprised to hear this claim of CEO Srinivas. Commenting on this, Rogan said, ‘Wow! This kind of lifestyle is a very recent thing which we all have now accepted as normal. Microsoft hit the mark in this matter. Perplexity head Srinivas explained that this strategy got generations accustomed to Microsoft products even before they entered the corporate world. He said, ‘This is why we all were taught to use Microsoft Word and Excel since childhood. “Once you learn it, you’re ready to work at a company that has PCs on their desks and is paying Microsoft to use the software.” By making Word and Excel mandatory in schools and early corporate culture, Microsoft created a never-ending cycle of profits. Gates didn’t set out to make computing beautiful like Jobs did – CEO Arvind Srinivas compared Bill Gates’ aggressive corporate vision to that of Apple co-founder Steve Jobs. He said that while Steve Jobs was focused on creating beautiful, attractive and simple machines, Microsoft’s goal was only to make profits. Srinivas said, ‘As Steve Jobs thought. They only cared about selling computers and software, because selling more software makes you rich.
