Colombia booked their place in the knockout stage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after edging out DR Congo 1-0 in a tense Group K encounter in Zapopan, Guadalajara.
The South Americans had to wait until the 76th minute for the breakthrough, with Daniel Munoz’s effort taking a decisive deflection on its way past goalkeeper Lionel Mpasi, who had frustrated Colombia throughout the contest with a string of impressive saves.
Colombia’s victory could have been far more comfortable. Luis Diaz twice found the net, but both efforts were ruled out — one for offside and the other for a foul in the build-up. The Bayern Munich and former Liverpool star was visibly frustrated after seeing both goals chalked off.
Despite eventually conceding, Mpasi delivered an outstanding performance for DR Congo, making eight saves and repeatedly denying Colombian attackers. The African side also threatened late in the game, forcing Camilo Vargas into several important stops to preserve Colombia’s slender advantage. Ultimately, however, Los Cafeteros had enough quality to secure all three points.
How Colombia Complicated Lionel Messi vs Cristiano Ronaldo?
The result secured Colombia’s progression to the last 32, but it also complicated the prospect of a potential quarterfinal showdown between football icons Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo later in the tournament.
Earlier in the day, Portugal had cruised to a commanding 5-0 victory over Uzbekistan to stay firmly in contention for top spot in Group K. After Group K’s second round of matches, Colombia lead the standings with six points, two ahead of Portugal, setting up a decisive FIFA World Cup 2026 clash between the two nations in Miami Gardens on Saturday. A draw will be enough for Colombia to finish first, while Portugal must win to leapfrog them.
How Can Portugal Face Argentina?
The battle for first place carries added significance because a quarterfinal meeting between Argentina and Portugal would require both teams to top their respective groups. Argentina have already completed their task, finishing atop Group J after victories over Austria and Algeria, with Lionel Messi scoring five goals across the two matches.
