Jammu and Kashmir Police have taken action against people found using unauthorised Virtual Private Network (VPN) services in violation of prohibitory orders issued by district authorities. Five individuals were booked in Anantnag and 15 in Sopore, while Kulgam Police have identified nine more persons for using unauthorised VPN services in breach of orders issued by the District Magistrate, Kulgam.
The action follows prohibitory orders issued by the District Magistrates of Kulgam and Anantnag on December 27, 2025, and a similar order issued in Baramulla district on December 29, 2025, which banned the use of unauthorised VPN services.
The move was aimed at protecting against the misuse of online platforms, including encrypted applications, that pose risks to public safety and security.
Proceedings have been initiated against 15 of them for violating orders issued by the District Magistrate, Baramulla.
According the officials, the prohibitory order in Baramulla district was issued on December 29, 2025, with the objective of curbing misuse of digital platforms and strengthening public safety measures.
Meanwhile, Jammu and Kashmir Police have stepped up enforcement across both Jammu and Kashmir. Multiple checkpoints in different parts of the Valley have been set up to carry out random checks of mobile phones, with a particular focus on detecting unauthorised VPN usage among youth. Officials said the enforcement drive will continue in the coming days.
The police reiterated that they remain committed to enforcing lawful orders and taking all necessary steps to prevent misuse of digital platforms in the interest of maintaining public order and security.
