After America imposed 50% tariff on Indian goods, sending salmon from India to America is now becoming costly for exporters. Due to this, there has been a huge decline of 37.5 percent in exports to America in the last four months.
According to the report of Global Trade Research Initiative (GTRI), this is the biggest decline this year. India’s exports to the US were $8.8 billion in May 2025, which fell to $5.5 billion by September 2025.
That is, in just four months, India’s exports have reduced by more than 3.3 billion dollars (about ₹ 28,000 crore).

Exports fell the most by 20% in September
September was the first month when full 50% duty was imposed on Indian goods. In the same month, the biggest monthly decline in exports was 20.3 percent. However this decline started from June. There was a decline of 5.7% in June, 3.6% in July, and 13.8% in August.
Textiles and gems and jewelery are most affected.
According to the report, big industries like textiles, gems and jewellery, engineering goods and chemicals have been most affected. There was a huge decline in shipments from these industries, which became the biggest reason for the export decline.
Now answers to two important questions…
Question 1: What is tariff and why did Trump impose it on India?
answer: Tariff means import duty. When a country buys goods from another country, it imposes some tax on it, it is called tariff. Trump says that India charges very high tariffs on American goods, while America imposes low taxes on Indian goods.
Trump feels this is unfair. Therefore, he had announced to impose 25% tariff on India under his ‘Reciprocal Tariff’ policy i.e. ‘tit for tat’ policy.
Trump had also expressed displeasure over India purchasing oil and military equipment from Russia. For this reason, an additional tariff of 25% was also imposed. That is, a total tariff of 50% has been imposed.
Question 2: What is the status of the trade deal between India and America?
answer: India and America have been working on a trade deal for a long time. The American team was scheduled to arrive for the sixth round of talks on August 25, but it was later postponed. Consensus was not possible on issues like agriculture sector.
After this, talks started again in September. Indian officials are hoping to seal a major agreement by the end of this year.
