The Nobel Prize for Literature 2026 will be announced today. The Swedish Academy will announce the name of the winner at 4:30 pm Indian time. Before the announcement, Chinese experimental writer Can Shwe is leading in bookmakers’ predictions.
Indian writer Amitav Ghosh’s name is also included among the possible winners. So far only Rabindranath Tagore from India has received the Nobel Prize for Literature. He was given this award in 1913. He was also the first Asian to win the Nobel.
The winners of the Nobel Prize will be honored in Stockholm, the capital of Sweden in December. They will be given medal, diploma and prize money. The prize money is 1.2 crore Swedish kronor i.e. about Rs 11.5 crore.

Can Shwe writes stories like dreams
73 year old Chinese writer Can Shwe is considered to be the strongest contender for the Nobel Prize in Literature this time. His real name is Deng Xiaohua.
Can Shwe’s stories are different from common stories. These contain dream-like scenes and focus more on the thoughts going on in the minds of the characters than on the story.
His writings have also been compared to famous writers Franz Kafka and Jorge Luis Borges.
His famous books include ‘The Last Lover’, ‘Love in the New Millennium’ and ‘I Live in the Slums’.

Amitav Ghosh reached the shortlist of International Booker
Indian writer Amitav Ghosh’s famous book ‘Sea of Poppies’ was included in the shortlist of the International Booker Prize in 2008. This book is the first part of his Ibis Trilogy.
Issues like history, environment and climate change feature prominently in Ghosh’s books. His another famous book ‘The Great Derangement’ is about climate change and its impact on humans.
Other notable writers of South Asian origin include Salman Rushdie, Michael Ondaatje and Mauritius-based Indian-origin writer Ananda Devi.

Writers from 10 countries including Japan-Australia also in race for Nobel
Famous Japanese writer Haruki Murakami has long been among the possible winners of the Nobel for Literature. Australia’s Gerald Murnan and America’s Thomas Pynchon are also prominent names.
Apart from this, the names of Mexico’s Christina Rivera Garsa, Spain’s Enrique Villa-Matas, Portugal’s Lidia Jorge, Russia’s Lyudmila Ulitskaya, Canada’s Margaret Atwood and France’s Michel Huellebecq are also in discussion.
However, this is not the official list of contenders. The Swedish Academy does not make public its shortlist of potential winners.
In the last 10 years, 4 women received the Literature Nobel
In the last 10 years, 10 writers received the Nobel for Literature, out of which 4 were women. Of these, 6 wrote in languages other than English, while 6 winners were from Europe. Han Kang of South Korea was the award-winning author from Asia in 2024. During this period no writer from South Asia won.
Every year the Swedish Academy invites nominations. In this, members of the Academy, professors of literature and language, former Nobel winners and prominent names of writers organizations can send their names. Authors cannot nominate themselves.
The Nobel Committee first selects 15 to 20 names, then narrows them down to 5 candidates in May. After this, 18 members of the Swedish Academy choose the winner by voting.

Nomination remains confidential for 50 years
The Swedish Academy does not release a longlist or shortlist of Nobel-nominated authors. Information related to nomination remains confidential for 50 years. Therefore, complete information about which writers were nominated in 2026 will be revealed in 2076.
According to Nobel records, Indian writers like Sarvapalli Radhakrishnan, Sri Aurobindo, Tarashankar Bandyopadhyay and RK Narayan were nominated for the Literature Nobel in different years.
