Police are probing the circumstances surrounding the death, while the reason behind the alleged suicide remains unknown.

A 31-year-old MSc Physics student at IIT Delhi died on Saturday morning after allegedly jumping from the sixth floor of a building on the institute’s campus. The Kishangarh police station received a PCR call at around 8.33 AM on Saturday about a student falling from a building at the IIT Delhi campus, according to media reports.
Police personnel immediately reached the spot and shifted the injured student to the hospital on the IIT Delhi campus. He was declared brought dead by doctors.
Crime Team, FSL Called To Spot
Following the incident, a crime team and a forensic science laboratory (FSL) team were called to the campus. The teams inspected the scene and collected evidence as part of the investigation.
Police said their preliminary enquiry established that the deceased was a 31-year-old student of the MSc Physics Department at IIT Delhi.
Student Entered Campus Around 8 AM
According to the police enquiry, the student entered the IIT Delhi campus through the main gate at around 8 am. He then went to the Lecture Hall Complex and took a lift to the sixth floor.
Police said he allegedly jumped from the front side of the building towards the Lecture Hall Complex.
No Suicide Note Recovered
Investigators said no apparent injury marks, other than those attributable to the fall, were found during the enquiry so far. No suicide note has been recovered.
A mobile phone was also found in the student’s pocket. The device will be examined as part of the investigation.
Police Seek Counselling Records
Police are obtaining the student’s counselling records and other relevant information from IIT Delhi as they continue to establish the circumstances surrounding the death.
The available facts are being verified, and further legal action will be taken as per law, police said.
Institute Offers Support To Bereaved Family
The Indian Institute of Technology Delhi (IIT Delhi) has expressed condolences over the death of an MSc student on August 22, 2026.
In a statement, the institute said it was deeply saddened by the student’s “tragic and untimely demise” and confirmed that the Delhi Police are investigating the incident.
The institute also extended its condolences to the student’s family.
“Our deepest thoughts and prayers are with the bereaved family. The Institute is providing all support to them,” IIT Delhi said.
