Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Wednesday said he never sought US President Donald Trump’s approval before launching strikes against Iran during last year’s military campaign in June, insisting that he only informed the American leader of Israel’s plans.

Speaking at a conference in Tel Aviv, Netanyahu said, “When I came to President Trump, I told him: ‘We are going into Iran.’ I did not ask permission. I simply informed him,” adding that he was “pleased that he ultimately joined in toward the end of this very important action.”

Netanyahu’s remarks refer to the “Twelve-Day War” in June 2025, which began on June 13 when Israel launched “Operation Rising Lion,” carrying out surprise airstrikes on Iranian military, energy and nuclear facilities. On June 22, the US entered the conflict with targeted strikes on Iranian nuclear sites.

Iran responded with “Operation True Promise,” firing more than 550 ballistic missiles and over 1,000 suicide drones across Israel. It also launched missiles at the Al Udeid Air Base, a US military facility in Qatar.

The Israeli leader’s latest comments come as the US and Iran have agreed an initial deal to end the war in West Asia, which has been fiercely opposed in Israel.

Washington and Tehran signed a memorandum of understanding last week aimed at reaching a permanent settlement between the two countries, following the war launched by the US and Israel on Iran on February 28.
