Popular chess streamer and International Master Levy Rozman, better known as GothamChess, has weighed in on the highly anticipated FIDE World Chess Championship 2026 clash between reigning champion Dommaraju Gukesh and challenger Javokhir Sindarov, offering a far more balanced prediction than much of the chess world.

In a video shared by FIDE, Rozman explained that while he slightly favours Sindarov heading into the title match, he believes people are underestimating Gukesh’s chances. According to him, the contest is far closer than the heavily one-sided predictions circulating online.

“Sindarov [to win]. But I don’t think it’s as crazy as everybody’s saying. Like everyone thinks it’s like 70/30 or 80/20 [in favour of Sindarov]. I think it’s like 55/45 for Sindarov,” Rozman was quoted as saying.

FIDE World Chess Championship 2026 – Gukesh vs Sindarov

Sindarov secured his place in the championship match after an outstanding performance at the FIDE Candidates Tournament 2026, where the Uzbek prodigy dominated the field to emerge as the official challenger. Over the last couple of years, he has built a reputation as one of the most consistent and fearless young players in world chess, leading many experts to label him the favourite against D Gukesh.

The two rising stars recently faced off during the Grand Chess Tour: Super Rapid and Blitz Poland 2026 in Warsaw. Gukesh won their rapid encounter, demonstrating his strength in longer formats, but Sindarov hit back impressively in the blitz section, defeating the Indian grandmaster on back-to-back days.

Since becoming world champion in 2024 after defeating Ding Liren, Gukesh has experienced mixed results across major tournaments. The Indian star recently revealed that he plans to step away from several top-level classical events to focus entirely on preparing for his world title defence.

FIDE has already announced provisional dates for the championship showdown, with the match expected to run from November 23 to December 17. The governing body has also begun the process of selecting the host city for what is shaping up to be one of the most eagerly awaited world championship matches in recent years.
