A Meerut court on Wednesday awarded death penalty to Muskan Rastogi and her partner Sahil Shukla for the murder of her husband Saurabh Rajput, a merchant navy officer, in the sensational March 2025 blue drum case. Meerut District Judge Arvind Mishra found Rajput’s wife Muskan and her partner Sahil Shukla guilty of murder, conspiracy, and destruction of evidence and sentenced them to death.

What is the status of other such gruesome murders?

THE BLUE DRUM MURDER CASE

According to the prosecution, Rajput was killed on March 3, 2025. Muskan and Sahil allegedly dismembered his body and placed the remains inside a blue drumwhich was subsequently filled with cement to conceal the crime. The case came to light after the remains were discovered at the couple’s house in Meerut.

The prosecution examined 22 witnesses during the trial, including people connected with the purchase of the drum, a knife and other material allegedly used in the crime.

Hotel managers and cab drivers were also examined to establish the movements of the accused, while records relating to their stays at different locations were presented before the court.

The trial has been actively underway in a Delhi Saket Court. The court framed charges of murder and disappearance of evidence against Aaftab. Rajesh Gulati was handed a life sentence by a CBI court in 2017. He recently approached the higher courts seeking bail/suspension of sentence on medical and technical grounds, but the judiciary has historically maintained a strict stance against premature release due to the exceptional brutality of the crime.
