The annual developer conference marked Tim Cook’s final WWDC keynote as chief executive, bringing an end to a leadership era that began in 2011.
Apple CEO Tim Cook used the closing moments of the company’s Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) 2026 keynote to reflect on his tenure at the tech giant, describing it as the “honor of a lifetime” as he prepares to hand over leadership to successor John Ternus.
The annual developer conference marked Tim Cook’s final WWDC keynote as chief executive, bringing an end to a leadership era that began in 2011 when he succeeded Apple co-founder Steve Jobs.
While the keynote primarily focused on software updates, developer tools and new operating system features, Tim Cook reserved the event’s closing minutes for a personal message to developers and Apple employees.
“On a personal note, some of the greatest highlights of my time as CEO have been events like this,” Tim Cook said, adding, “Sharing powerful new tools with all of you and then seeing what you create with them has been a constant reminder that imagination has no limits.”
Tim Cook praised Apple’s developer community for creating products and experiences that have helped people connect, learn and create in new ways over the years.
“You have helped people connect, create, learn, and experience the world in extraordinary new ways,” he said, adding that the innovations unveiled at this year’s conference left him optimistic about the company’s future.
“I truly believe the best is still ahead,” he asserted. Reflecting on Apple’s mission, Tim Cook said the company’s guiding principle has always been to build products that improve people’s lives.
“At Apple, creating the best products in the world to deliver experiences that enrich people’s lives has always been our North Star,” he said.
In his final remarks, Tim Cook expressed gratitude for the opportunity to lead the company and work alongside Apple’s employees.
“It’s been the honor of a lifetime to help advance that mission with teams whose creativity, care, and conviction continue to make a lasting difference in people’s lives,” he said.
Tim Cook’s departure from the CEO role marks one of the most significant leadership transitions in Apple’s recent history. During his tenure, Apple expanded beyond the iPhone into services, wearables, custom silicon and new software ecosystems, becoming one of the world’s most valuable companies.
The leadership baton is set to pass to John Ternus, Apple’s longtime executive and current head of hardware engineering, who is expected to oversee the company’s next phase of growth and product development.
As the keynote concluded, Tim Cook thanked developers for their continued support and participation in WWDC, signing off his final conference as CEO with a simple message: “Thank you all for joining us. Let’s have a great WWDC.”
