HMPV Virus in India Live Updates: How Does HMPV Compare To COVID-19?
Human metapneumovirus (HMPV) and COVID-19 share several similarities, as both cause respiratory symptoms such as cough, fever, congestion, sore throat, and shortness of breath. They are also transmitted through respiratory droplets, according to WebMD.
However, there are notable differences in their behavior and seasonality:
Seasonality: According to Science Direct, COVID-19 shows temperature sensitivity and seasonal patterns. Similarly, the CDC notes that HMPV, while detectable year-round, typically peaks in the U.S. from late winter to early spring.
Impact of COVID-19 Restrictions: Studies indicate that HMPV cases tripled in some areas after COVID-19 restrictions were lifted. The reduced exposure to viruses during lockdowns likely weakened population immunity, leading to a rise in respiratory infections once precautions were relaxed.
Despite their similarities, the viruses have distinct characteristics, including differences in severity, long-term immunity, and the availability of vaccines and treatments, with COVID-19 having vaccines and antiviral treatments, unlike HMPV.
HMPV Virus in India Live Updates: Treatment For HPMV
HMPV cannot be treated with antiviral medications, and there is currently no approved vaccine for prevention. Most individuals can manage their symptoms at home until they recover.
For severe cases, hospitalisation may be necessary. Treatment in the hospital may include:
- Oxygen Therapy: If breathing becomes difficult, additional oxygen may be provided through a face mask or a nasal tube.
- Intravenous (IV) Fluids: To maintain hydration, fluids may be administered intravenously.
- Corticosteroids: These medications can help reduce inflammation and alleviate certain symptoms.
Supportive care focuses on relieving symptoms and ensuring proper hydration and oxygenation until the body clears the infection.
HMPV Virus in India Live Updates: How Is HMPV Diagnosed?
HMPV is usually diagnosed by medical professionals through an evaluation of your medical history and symptoms. Diagnosis involves collecting a sample from your throat or nose using a swab, which is then analyzed in a laboratory to detect the presence of the virus or other pathogens. Testing for HMPV is typically reserved for individuals with severe symptoms.
In some cases, doctors may also use diagnostic tools like bronchoscopy or chest X-rays to examine the airways and assess the condition of the lungs.
HMPV Virus in India Live Updates: What Are The Symptoms Of HMPV?
- Human metapneumovirus (HMPV) typically causes symptoms resembling a common cold, but it can lead to severe illness in certain individuals.
- Young children are particularly vulnerable to serious complications, as the first encounter with HMPV often results in a more severe illness.
- After the initial infection, partial immunity develops, reducing the risk of severe illness. Subsequent infections are more likely to cause mild, cold-like symptoms.
- Severe cases are also more common among adults over 65, individuals with respiratory conditions, and those with weakened immune systems.
- Common symptoms include cough, fever, runny or stuffy nose, sore throat, wheezing, shortness of breath (dyspnea), and sometimes a rash.
- In some cases, HMPV can cause complications such as bronchitis, pneumonia, asthma exacerbations, or ear infections.
HMPV Virus in India Live Updates: How Does HMPV Spread?
HMPV primarily spreads through respiratory droplets released during coughing or sneezing. It can also be transmitted through close contact with infected individuals or by coming into contact with contaminated surfaces or environments.
According to the Chinese CDC, the infection period for HMPV typically lasts three to five days. However, the immune response generated by the virus is insufficient to prevent future reinfections. While HMPV can be detected throughout the year, it is most commonly observed during the winter and spring months.
HMPV Virus in India Live Updates: What Is HMPV?
Discovered in 2001, human metapneumovirus (HMPV) belongs to the Pneumoviridae family, which also includes the respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). HMPV is known to cause upper and lower respiratory tract infections, with symptoms similar to those of the common cold or flu.
While the virus can affect anyone, it poses a significant risk to young children, the elderly, and individuals with weakened immune systems, the CDC notes.
Research suggests that HMPV has been circulating for at least six decades and is now recognized as a widespread respiratory pathogen with global prevalence.
HMPV Virus in India Live Updates: Delhi Authorities Issue Guidelines To Prevent Breakout
After two HMPV cases were reported in Karnataka, Delhi authorities have issued an advisory to ensure preparedness for potential health challenges amid a massive surge in China. Strict isolation protocols and universal precautions have been mandated and hospitals have been instructed to promptly report Influenza-like Illness (ILI) and Severe Acute Respiratory Infection (SARI) cases through the IHIP Portal.
